Boracay During the Off-Season

March 30th, 2006

Boracay in the Philippines is among one of the best beaches in the world. It is because of the great sand and clean waters that make Boracay a wonderful beach to relax. There are also lots of establishments there in Boracay that can make their experience better. The nightlife there during peak seasons such as holy weeks and all saints day is great because lots of people go to Boracay to have fun.

But what happens to Boracy during the off-season when the bad winds arrive? It may seem stupid for lots of people to go there when the winds are scary and the rain is pouring. Who would want to swim when the rain pours and makes you chill more? The rain will also make people think that it will dampen their merry night life. But here are some reasons why it is still ok to go to Boracay even if it is off-season. Here are some reasons that can help convince people that Boracay is great no matter what season it is.

1. It is cheaper to go to Boracay during the off-season. If you are on a budget it is the best time to go. The flights from Manila to Caticlan are cheaper. If you are on budget and have motion problems when riding boats, you can just go during the off-season because you can ride the planes and it can still fit your budget. The hotel accommodations and food are also cheaper, usually up to 25%.

2. The strong winds can help make an experience riding a Paraw or a special kind of sail more fun. For P500 you can be able to sail with two able-bodied sea goers. You can be able to enjoy cruising for an hour on the shoreline. You can be able to watch the crystal clear waters when sitting on the Paraw’s left wing while holding on the ship’s rigging for support.

3. The massage will be cheaper compared to massages in Manila. You can be able to get massages for only P350 in your own room and have coconut oil rubbed on you.

4. Surfing on a kite board is better on a windy day. It is called a kite board because the person will strap their feet onto the surfboard and will lasso their upper body to a 15-foot kite. Hoe can you be able to do that on a summer day without any wind? The price of kite boarding is around $200 because it includes trainers and P1, 000 per hour for the board. It is cheaper to pay this amount than pay for future hospital bills when you end up in an accident.

These are only a few reasons why Boracay in the Philippines is still a fun place to go to even during the off-seasons. I’m sure that you can be able to find your own reason why going there during the off-season is still fun.

Fiancé Visas - U.S. Immigration

March 30th, 2006

Overview

We have successfully obtained thousands of fiancee and marriage visas. These include visas for wives and husbands in all countries including Latin America (Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama), asian countries (China, Viet Nam, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, China), the former USSR (Russia, the Ukraine, Czechoslovakia), the Phillipeans, Europe Canada and more.

The length of time it takes us to obtain a fiancee visa depends on the state in which you reside, the country in which your fiancee lives and the immigration processing center where the application is processed. We will do all of the work and provide you with a realistic time estimate based upon your situation. We obtain fiancee visas for clients from every state in the U.S. Call us at (952) 746-2153.

Whether you met that special someone on a trip overseas or while she/he was visiting the United States or even in an online chat-room, if you’re ready to join as husband and wife, or at least fiances, you may be eligible to bring your fiancé(e) to the U.S. to finalize your union in marriage.

If you are a U.S. citizen and your fiancé(e) lives abroad, the Fiancé Visa may be just what you’ve been looking for. The Fiancé Visa is a relatively fast process that allows your fiancé to enter the U.S. to marry you and then adjust his/her status to lawful permanent resident based on the marriage (without having to leave the U.S.). Compared to other types of permanent status visas like the Family Based Petition, Employment Based Petition, or the Diversity Lottery program, the Fiancé Visa has a relatively fast processing time and when done properly, can reunite you and your fiancé(e) in the United States.

Procedure

The first step is to file the Fiancé Visa Petition with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), with supporting documents. It is very important to submit the necessary supporting documents; failure to do so can result in long delays or even denial of the petition.

Once the petition is approved, the INS will forward the petition to the U.S. Embassy or consulate where your fiancé(e) resides. Your fiancé(e) would then be contacted by the embassy or consulate for an interview. Some of the documents that your fiancé(e) may need to present at the interview include: a valid passport, evidence of support, birth certificate, medical examination report, divorce decree or death certificate of any previous spouse, police certificates from all places lived since age sixteen (16), evidence of the validity of your relationship; and passports and medical examinations for any accompanying children.

Upon issuance of the visa, your fiancé(e) would be allowed into the U.S. to marry you; however, the marriage must take place within 90 days of your fiancé(e) entering the United States. If you do not marry your fiancé(e) within 90 days or your fiancé(e) marries someone other than you (the U.S. citizen filing the Petition for Alien Fiancé), your fiancé(e) will be required to leave the United States. In addition, your fiancé(e) may not obtain an extension of the 90-day original admission. Therefore, it is very important to marry during the 90 admission period. If your fiancé(e) does not marry you and stays beyond the 90 days, he/she will be subject to deportation as well as possible bars from returning to the United States for specified periods of time.

Permanent Residence (Green Card)

After you marry, your fiancé(e) may apply to become a permanent resident (Green Card). Your fiancé(e), now spouse, will receive conditional permanent residence status because the status is based on a marriage that was less than two years old on the day he/she was given permanent residence. The status is conditional because you and your new spouse must prove that you did not get married to evade the immigration laws of the United States. The conditional status will last for two years, at which point you must apply for removal of the conditions on the status.

Employment Authorization

Although it may take months or longer for approval of the green card, your new spouse may apply for employment authorization while the green card application is pending. Employment authorization would allow your new spouse to work legally while waiting for permanent residence.

Reminder

An important reminder is that only U.S. citizens may take advantage of the Fiancé Petition. Presently, there is no provision that allows lawful permanent residents to use the Fiancé Petition.

If there is someone special in your life whom you are considering to be your husband or wife, we have been very successful in assisting our clients with Fiancé(e) Visas and would gladly assist you with yours. Call (952) 746-2153 or visit www.workvisalawyers.com.

PGMA, GMA, UP, and ABS

March 24th, 2006

I always have had this feeling that the UP College of Mass Communication is blatantly Kapuso. Popular sentiment is often anti-ABS-CBN. At least from what I hear. Play-safe lang kasi, alam nyo naman, majority of the Metro is Kapuso.

The reason why GMA-7 gets the most of the best graduates especially from UP-Diliman is they have a lot of partnerships with the University, especially this so-called GMA President’s Medal of Excellence awarded to the best Journalism and Broadcast Communication student. Ngayon, they’re offering scholarships to Journ, Broad-Com, ECE, and Electrical Eng’g students.

That aside, it’s already part of Philippine Press discussions what happened with ABS-CBN in previous years, such as that of the Meralco issue, the Election and others. Often, it is a call for disappointment and disapproval. There;s this claim that ABS-CBN’s “news stars” are only for the glamour and not for real journalism.

Today, I believe there’s no reason to look at ABS-CBN news’ track record in terms of its mistakes and biases. We have to admit that TV Patrol was the first Philippine newscast that took up the ratings, with the same techniques, gimmicks and type of tabloid journalism that is now making 24 Oras popular. It was conceptualized by the same person who thought up all those classic entertainment shows-Freddie Garcia. Thanks to him, we’ve had the longest-running newscast in Philippine free TV (coz the longest running is still The World Tonight on ANC), and we’ve made tabloid journalism (e.g., “10 tao, nasagasaan, PATAY!”) a staple for primetime.

We can say all we want regarding the pitfalls of ABS-CBN news. But that was before. Things have changed. The management of the department has changed. It has now been transformed into whatever we see today. Notice that the election coverage was before Maria Ressa came into the scene. Same with MERALCO. But now she’s there, and she’s taking flak from all sides for trying to establish credibility and fearless reporting. So, if we look at track record, considering that we don’t have the same executives, we’re missing out on objectivity here.

Tracking back, I mentioned the UP College of Mass Comm because I got this interesting observation from the chairperson of the Journalism department. Aside from the fact that ABS-CBN news had been that extensive in covering the Wowowee stampede and the aftermath, he noted that in the period during and after Proclamation 1017, the influx of political and national news (which were and are important) was covered by ABS-CBN. On the other hand, he noticed a lessening of that same type of news in 24 or Saksi. They focused more on the crime news and the SAWA-sighting stories, which are by the way, the reasons why our news has this pull on ratings. Something about a chopped head or a body in the river will always turn heads in the living room.

Look at it in any way, but this is already a sign of something. The fact that most of the President’s tirades is on ABS-CBN and the already known fact that she has shown favorites could lead us into question. Too bad, ABS-CBN already has this repution of being pro-administration. Let’s just persevere, do what it takes, and let’s keep on until we are truly recognized as Asia’s news leader. GOD SPEED!!

PEACE all!!

Search Engine Optimization

March 24th, 2006

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the act of altering or optimizing your website and it’s content in order that search engines deem it to be relevant and useful to certain topics. You are able to select the most appropriate topics through the use of certain keywords in your website.

When surfers conduct searches on search engines they are presented with a list of results for that search term. These results are called Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) and generally speaking, the websites that appear at the top of the SERPs will receive plenty of traffic to their websites from searchers.

In order to determine your position on the SERPs, search engines use their own algorithms. While nobody knows for absolute certain what these algorithms are it is widely accepted that your website needs to be easy to navigate, popular and relevant.

Easy navigation means that your site should have text links to each of its pages. If you use a flash menu system then you should include a sitemap in order that search engines and visitors can quickly and easily find their way around the whole of your website.

In order to make your website appear popular you need to get links to your site. While search engines would rather these links were generated because visitors to your site genuinely found your content useful, it is commonplace to undertake a reciprocal link campaign or generate inbound links. Reciprocal links mean a website links to you in exchange for a link to their own site.

Relevance is judged by your content. By including the keywords you place in the metatags of your site throughout the body of your content and in certain places within your site you are indicating to the search engines that your website contains relevant information.

By combining these factors you can effectively convince search engines that you deserve to be near the top of their SERPs. However, this can take time and a lot of effort if you don’t fully understand what you are doing.

Summer Skin Care

March 22nd, 2006

Strappy sandals with colorful toe nails, tan limbs, easy-breezy haircuts, aromatic suntan lotions and wild-patterned beachwear. Ahhhh, summer!

There’s a lot of preparation that goes into getting ready for summer. Many people begin working out months in advance with a vengeance so they can sport toned, washboard abs, tighter thighs and hips and shapely arms. They carefully shop for the perfect outfits, shoes, bathing suits and revealing togs to compliment the newly sleek physique.

Getting ready for fun in the sun basically encompasses the region from the neck down to the toes and most people forget to include their faces in the regimen. Sure, they remember to slather on sun block, wear a hat and sunglasses, and are careful not to overexpose their bodies with too much sun but the fact remains that unattended faces can make one look older than their years.

An unattended face is droopy because skin care is not enough; there are jowls and pouches, thin unexpressive lips and usually a double chin or tired, lined eyes. Most people are unaware that exercise can work for the face just as it works for the body. Just like your body, your face has muscles under the skin and these facial muscles require exercise to keep the skin from dragging downward. When the skin loses its resiliency the facial muscles no longer support the cheeks, lower mouth or forehead and a misshapen face develops over time. Even lips will lose fullness as the face loses volume.

How does one recapture a youthful visage? Will creams, lotions and potions reverse sagging muscles and make the skin tighter? Only if they would; we could all have toned tightened skin on every area of our body. Just think about it…sagging underarms – no problem, let’s just slap on a little cream or rear-end looking a little droopy – where’s that magic potion? Alas, that’s not possible.

Surgery for the face and lips has become epidemic yet there are many men and women who would rather count on natural methods to help them look their best. Nothing beats exercise. It forces oxygenated blood to the tissue, helps you look healthier and feel more alive. Imagine a younger looking face to match that new “ready for summer” body using an exercise routine that can be completed in just minutes a day. Not all exercise programs are created equal so for optimum results, choose one that offers isometric and resistance type movements.

In the face, the muscles are attached to bone on only one end; the other end inserts into another muscle or the skin. To achieve resistance the muscle and skin must be anchored. Only when the muscle is anchored can a contraction occur and when this happens, the muscle responds by tightening and repositioning; the face looks younger because the muscles, just below the skin, are in much better physical condition.

iPod Radio - Well Maybe

March 21st, 2006

Apple recently announced the release of the iPod Radio Remote. This little accessory combines a wired remote control with a FM radio receiver. It works with the iPod nano and the most recent generation (fifth) of iPods.

The iPod Radio Remote is a convenient way for music lovers to control their iPod and add FM radio for a reasonable price point. Using the remote, you can skip tracks and adjust the volume of your iPod even when it’s in a pocket or backpack. It’s main feature - lets you and listen to FM radio stations while it displays station and song information on the iPod’s screen.

“The iPod Radio Remote combines two great features in one elegant product,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s iPod Marketing guy said recently. “The iPod Radio Remote is both the best remote control and the best FM radio listening experience for iPod.”

If you search the Apple iPod store online, you will also find a couple of competitors that launched similar products ahead of Apple. But I must admit, the Apple Radio Remote is a cleaner package. If you live in the city and get good FM reception, this is a nice little add-on. If you live in the burbs and are looking for great sound - similar to the quality that you get from your iPod, then forget about the iPod Radio Remote. Why, because it is like any other small FM radio, it needs a strong signal to give you decent sound.

But don’t give up, there is quite a lot happening in the real time audio market and you will have more choices in the coming months.

There were several rumors in 2005 about Apple and satellite radio for instance. “The iPod is the biggest, baddest thing around and satellite radio is this small, cool device,” said Steve Mather, an analyst with Sander Morris Harris. “Put them together and it’s the ultimate.”

But there has been no evidence that such a dream machine is in the works. Earlier this year, Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Mel Karmazin said he had approached Steve Jobs, the chief of iPod maker Apple Computer, about a possible deal but said Jobs wasn’t interested.

Sirius didn’t sit on its butt. They created their first portable device called the S50, a small, sleek device used with a docking port in your car. It is like a TiVo for radio. It automatically stores music for later listening. You can schedule recordings from both music and talk stations (with a firmware upgrade), save favorite songs, and link up to a PC to load music files. But… you can’t see the song list for recorded music. The S50 is available only with a car kit and the controls are hard to use.

Not to be left out, XM recently unveiled a new satellite radio for spring ‘06. Like their initial radio, the new receiver will pick up satellite signals as you are walking around outside. No docking station is needed, which is a huge advantage over the Sirius S50. It also has 1 gigabyte of memory so that you can record 50 hours of radio play. Out doing the S50 - there are no restrictions on how or what you can record. In fact, XM has made it even easier to capture individual songs.

The new XM player also provides a “tag” feature that let’s you immediately purchase any song you hear from Napster’s online store. When you reconnect the player to your computer, you can get those MP3’s that you just purchased to create a mix of MP3’s and radio content on the player.

XM now appears to be ahead of Sirius and Apple in the radio wars. To prove it they announced the XM Passport, a small card that can be plugged in and out of future XM enabled devices. With the passport card, you need only buy one subscription to XM radio to power a number of satellite receivers; just plug in your passport card.

Brokeback Mountain Blues

March 21st, 2006

I wanted to see it, but I didn’t want to see it. I’m talking about the “gay cowboy” movie called Brokeback Mountain (even though I read Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the two major actors - “Jack Twist.”, wants it to mean much more than that to its audience).

I didn’t want to see Brokeback Mountain because I felt it could be considered some type of tacit approval of two men “falling in love,” which goes against my Christian grain and biblical beliefs, but I wanted to see it because I am humanly “gay all the way.” However, I am not a practicing homosexual (some would say I’m a professional one), sober and celibate by choice, so help me God, because of deep spiritual convictions.

I went and ran errands with a gay friend (who knows my beliefs and knew me wild and now knows me tame), visiting his “lover” in the Bowling Green, Ohio jail where he’s doing ten days for a drunk driving, donated an autographed copy of my book Beyond Babylon: Europe’s Rise and Fall to the main library in downtown Bowling Green (since I was born there 46 years ago, but never lived there), we picked up some fast food and visited my friend’s mother where we ate and then he asked if I wanted to see Brokeback Mountain that would be showing at Franklin Park Mall (now called Southfield or something since the Brits took it over) in Toledo shortly, so I said yes and we rushed to get there and made it — ten minutes late. He had seen it a week earlier up in Michigan with some gay and lesbian friends, thinking it wouldn’t be shown around here — wrong!

Immediately you have to stand in awe (or sit and watch) the scenery that is most spectacular and moving, especially as the sheep are being herded and moving on the big screen in front of you like you could reach out and pet one, and the mountains are majestic aspiring to reach Heaven with their snow-capped tops and trimmed with forests here and there, evergreens, and of course I couldn’t help but think of the irony of nature playing such a prominent role in this film that the Apostle Paul would say is against nature….

I was surprised to see so many older folks in the audience. I thought they would all be set in their ways (I’m not saying that’s wrong in some ways), traditional, opposed to such a real or imagined threat to “family values.” Maybe they just wanted to watch a movie that looked interesting or they’re also jaded, or desensitized to the seriousness of sin like too many, or recognized that it could provoke discussion or a greater understanding (without necessarily approving of it) of this whole issue of homosexuality.

I thought the first sex scene was rather abrupt, nothing really leading up to it, no mating game or cruising or furtive glances or hints of anything out of the ordinary. Must have all been buried underneath all that butch (masculine) appearance, simmering somewhere, and the fuel on the fire was a tad too much liquor, true to life. Alcohol can strip away any inhibitions some might have or offer an excuse later to help cover your butt (which is why I am sober and celibate by the grace of God). The movie does help blow the stereotype that all homosexuals are limp-wristed, sissy faggots - but didn’t Rock Hudson already prove that? Among others.

The whole idea (or unwholesome idea) of two men on a mountain, far away from rules and regulations and norms, reminded me of a passage within a little booklet I wrote years ago (God and the Gays: What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality) to address many of the issues Brokeback Mountain broached: about how some men who are basically “straight” (heterosexual) will engage in homosexual acts while in prison or a monastery, but will quickly revert to their preferred heterosexual passion as soon as possible and pretend nothing ever happened.

In BM, which we called “Bareback Mountain” among ourselves (no “safe sex” practiced in it among the men or women involved since it was set in the sixties), the fellows went their separate ways initially and got married and thereby proved they were hybrids - bisexuals - since they could obviously get sexually stimulated by men and women. A curiousity to both heterosexuals and homosexuals. But the first chance they had to get back together, in every way, they jumped at it like a raging bull let out of his cage. “Free at last, free at last!”

I’ve watched Oprah have men on her program who have been married for years, with children, who have suddenly “discovered’ they’re gay, and in “finding” themselves - isn’t that just interestin’? - lose their wife and children. What about the commitment they made before both God and man? I don’t care if you’re gay or straight, if you make a vow you should keep it! Why make victims of the truly innocent wife and children who didn’t ask for it? Of course some will say they’re all victims, and that’s true to an extent, but even if someone has “feelings” they should control them or nip wrong thoughts in the bud — not permit them to take root and grow.

Why do some find it fascinating for a man to cheat on his wife with another man, but would stone someone who was going through his “midlife crisis” sleeping around with younger women to prove some point to himself? It’s not that the thoughts aren’t there, it is possible to lust after your neighbor’s wife or husband (or both), but you’re supposed to rein in such maverick thoughts and not let them run roughshod over your life and marriage!

Of course two men can fall in love, or a married man and woman can fall in love with someone other than their spouse, but you’re not supposed to set yourself up for a fall, you’re not supposed to let yourself flirt with forbidden love, you’re supposed to control the thoughts rather than let them control you (Genesis 4:7).

Brokeback Mountain forcibly brings all these tumultous thoughts, tormenting conflicts of interest and personal struggles to the surface, surging like lava from a volcano, which I’m now wrestling with and pouring out for others to consider.

We can feel hopeless and all too human or we can transcend human relationships, overcoming sin rather than being overcome by it, by going up to the Mountain, following the path paved by the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53), who gave His back to be beaten for us to break the power of sin over us, by whose stripes you are healed, who bears our heartaches, sorrow and sin; by going up to Mount Zion and “to the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels…” (Hebrews 12:22).

Instead of wrong desires that only lead to self-destruction, please let us yearn to return to Zion, time and again.

The Demise of Big Brother

March 21st, 2006

Way back in the year 2000 when Big Brother first exploded onto our screens, it was a brand new concept. An interesting Game show where all you had to do was live in a house with a bunch of strangers for 3 months and at the end of it you could win £70,000.

The whole country was gripped. Would Nasty Nick get caught? Would Mel and Andy get it together? How did Craig Phillips – The most boring man in the country ever end up the winner??

Right across Great Britain, from Schools to Offices; Supermarket queues and coffee shops, everyone had an opinion and everyone had their favourite for one reason or another. It was new and exciting TV. No script and no plotline just throw them all in together and give them challenges to complete and see what happens.

The winner – Craig Phillips – went on to be a TV Handyman and popped up everywhere. He even tried his hand at the music biz and brought out a cheesy Christmas song for which all the profits (Along with his winnings) went to charity.

Season 2 got a little bit more exciting with the outspoken Brian Dowling being the final winner only just pipping Hairdresser Helen Adams to the post. Helen also had her will they won’t they story with fellow housemate Paul Clarke. Amazingly now 4 years later they are still together so Big Brother was a fairy tale ending for them.

It was from season 3 that things started going downhill when BB started playing with the format and added the Heaven & Hell sections of the house. Those on one side had more luxuries and better food than those on the other. A weekly task, shown live on Saturday nights, determined which housemates lived on which side of the Heaven and Hell divide. This season also brought us Jade Goody who, aside from her dumb blonde personality, is the highest earning ex-housemate of all the BB series’. Kate Lawler the Winner of BB3 enjoyed success as a Breakfast TV presenter for a while.

The whole Big Brother idea has just gone downhill from there. It is no longer new and different and no matter how much the producers play with the format, it will never be as good as that first season. These days it is all about who will get their boobs out first and who will have sex first. Whoever wins it is not important anymore as everyone just wants their 15 minutes of Fame!

Music: An Enjoyable Necessity

March 21st, 2006

It’s a safe bet that, since the arrival of cognitive human beings on this earth, music has, in some form had a significant effect on their lives. The first sounds, other than speech, were probably produced by hitting something; wood, stone or hide; and ancient peoples must have appreciated the sounds of the world around them; of water, weather and animals; and were the sounds of a rippling stream or a gushing waterfall music to their ears? And when they stood at the seashore did the crashing waves and the suck of the tides move them in some way?

There is something deep within our psyche, which reacts and ‘remembers’ music. It is more than probable that sounds relating to music and rhythm came long before sounds relating to communication and speech. Today, this theory can be tested by noting a baby’s reaction to a lullaby as compared to speech. If you’re lucky, humming can soothe the most fractious child and even send them to sleep! Music, in the form of rhythm was used by many peoples as a way of sending messages to out of sight recipients; consider the jungle drums of Africa or the Alpine horn, the Aboriginal didgeridoo or the use of bells as a warning of attack.

The days of learning our lessons by rote have, mostly, disappeared. This is because it has, rightly, been recognised that we don’t necessarily absorb the content of what we repeat over and over again. But, as an aid to memory, music still has its uses. Songs we have learnt in childhood can be recalled far later in life than mere words. Music is a well known and much used therapy in illnesses that involve memory loss; Stroke, Alzheimers etc; and not only as a recall aid but also as a re-learning tool. Speech therapists use music extensively when trying to teach stroke victims how to speak again. The rhythm and melody of a familiar tune will often ‘trigger’ a positive response, when no amount of visual stimuli has an effect.

And then there is the cohesive quality of music; from the singing of a country’s National Anthem to a football crowds chant; from carol singers to brass bands. Musical participation has been used in every walk of life. The chain gangs of America’s Deep South would use music to get through the day and establish a rhythm to mundane physical labour. Sailors would pull a hawser or ’sheet’ in unison while singing a familiar ‘hornpipe’ or reel; The wonderful gospel sounds that poured from the wooden churches of the Southern states black population were a potent community tool to promote and celebrate their culture; a lucky offshoot was the inspiration of much of our modern rhythm and blues. Nowadays factories all over the world use ‘piped’ music to soothe the workers; if you’re doing a humdrum task music can make the time go faster.

When we think about it music is not just a pleasant pastime that is either passively listened to or actively produced. It has a much deeper, more fundamental purpose. Our reactions to outside events can be completely altered by music. It can make us happy, sad, frightened, elated, thoughtful . . . the list of emotions it engenders are as long as their number. And words are not necessary to create this ambience; for instance, how would silent movies have worked without the music? Those Keystone Cops without the frenetic piano plinkity plonk; the doe eyed heroines without the sobbing strings; the huge sweeping epics without full orchestral back up? They just wouldn’t have worked. Nowadays, with the proliferation of world music, we listen to and enjoy music in many different languages, without necessarily understanding a word the singers say; much as opera was once listened to as the fashionable ‘world’ music of its day; just another example of the emotive power of music.

So, it’s fair to say that music has an innate basis in our evolutionary makeup. We have probably used it since homo sapiens first walked the earth. Other animals do use sounds in their day to day living (frogs croak, dogs howl, sheep bleat etc.) but, with the possible exception of birds, we are the only species to enjoy making melody out of sound. We’ve utilised every viable tool, from the human voice to electronic tones, to create ever more varied compositions. Wouldn’t it be intriguing to discover how soon into our evolution the power and beauty of the human voice was appreciated? As the centuries have passed musicians have been, rightly, feted for their skill to move us with song, melody and rhythm. Once musicians were revered as priests, interpreting the sounds of the gods. Nowadays we are more pragmatic; but we still need that harmony in our lives; even if it’s only our mobile phone ringtone!

Beach Volleyball: A Truly Versatile Game

March 21st, 2006

Beach volleyball is a great impromptu game. Almost anywhere that there is sand and a net; groups of friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even strangers will gather for a few rounds of beach volleyball. A playful game of beach volleyball doesn’t have to be too strenuous, so it is easy to have teams with people of all different ages and with mixed levels of fitness. This makes beach volleyball an ideal family game for a lively summer afternoon.

Of course, beach volleyball can be also be a very strenuous game in a competitive setting. When serious athletes get together for a beach volleyball tournament, the ball flies through the air fast and viciously.

To play beach volleyball, you only need a minimum of two people per team for a total of four players. However, the less experienced and skilled the players are, the more people you will probably want to have on each team in order to keep the ball in the air. The more players that are involved, the less ground each player will be responsible for covering. A game with just a few participants is likely to be quite a workout as everybody scrambles across the sand to reach the ball; whereas in a game with a large team different players can concentrate on their own areas of the sand, enabling them to rest a bit when the ball is elsewhere. The fact that beach volleyball can be a fun, low-key game for a friendly crowd of casual players or a serious endeavor with a quartet of accomplished athletes makes it one of the most versatile sports.

The rules of beach volleyball are the same as the rules for any form of volleyball, but play on the sand tends to be a bit different than play on a court. It is much more difficult to move quickly on sand than it is on most surfaces, so play is generally slower than in court volleyball. To train for beach volleyball, athletes must spend a lot of time developing their lower body strength so they can move quickly and accurately across the ground despite the friction and resistance of the sand. While powerful legs are an important part of successful volleyball play, the ability to jump high and hard and land without injury are substantially more vital in beach volleyball than in court volleyball.

Even experienced court players often don’t anticipate how difficult it will be to run and jump on sand, so volleyball players who are new to the beach often sustain injuries because they misjudged how much resistance the sand would give them. Skinned knees and elbows are par for the course among players at all levels of the game, especially because a player often forgets to protect him or herself when diving for the ball in the heat of the game.

How to Choose a Digital Camera

March 21st, 2006

A Digital Camera has become the standard in photography. It’s smaller than film camera, easier to operate, and holds many more pictures. On a digital camera you can click away as much as you want. If you don’t like the outcome - just delete it. For a non professional photographer it’s heaven. Instead of taking just one picture you can take 10 pictures - with and without flash, in different modes, from different angles. Later, at home, you can choose the best one to keep (You will probably just keep them all).

The problem at hand is how to choose the best digital camera. Here are some points to consider.

Price

There are cameras at under $100, and well over $2000, the sky is the limit. How much should you pay? It all depends on your budget and on what you expect from the camera. Professionals and serious amateurs will not settle for anything but the latest, best model. The “Sunday photographer”, who just wants to document a trip abroad, would probably not need these models. To get the best outcome of a sophisticated camera takes knowledge that not anyone wishes to acquire. Still, I don’t recommend taking the simplest cheapest cameras. The cameras in the mid-price range ($300-$600), have enough “wisdom” built into them to compensate for beginner mistakes, and enough simplicity in the human interface for anyone to operate them.

Doesn’t matter which digital camera you buy, it will cost less next week, when the new model comes out. The new model will be better, and will cost what you paid now. This is always true, and will be true next week and next month. Accept it. Don’t wait forever for the ultimate model with the lowest price. Make the best choice possible today.

Remember also to check what the price of the camera includes. Usually you will need budget for some accessories such as extra memory card, batteries, battery recharger (make sure it works on 110 Volts and 220V), tripod, bag and anything else you would want.

Mega Pixels

This number appears first on all digital camera data sheets, and it seems like the higher the better. In a way, this is true, but how high do you really need it to be?

This number determines the picture resolution. Instead of film, a digital camera has a grid of electronic cells that read light and color information. Having a grid that is made up of more “dots” enables finer details of the picture to appear clearly. This sounds great - why not have as many pixels (”dots”) as possible? First, because it costs more. You need more of these electronic cells in the camera, and you need to pay for them. Then, you need to save the information that all these cells produce. A picture taken by an 8 Mega-pixel camera will occupy twice the memory taken by a 4 Mega pixel camera.

Do you need such a sensitive camera? Depends on what you want to do with the pictures. If you are going to enlarge them into billboards, you will need all the details as fine as you can get them. If you are going to print the pictures out in standard size, even 4 Mega pixels is much more than enough. If you are going to look at the picture on your monitor, 4 mega pixels is very good.

Optical and Digital Zoom

Forget about digital zoom!! Ignore it, disable it, and never touch it. Your camera has this grid we talked about inside. The picture comes through the lens, and every point of this grid assigns a value of color and brightness to itself. This is what this points “saw”. It cannot “look closer”. Now, suppose you want to zoom in x4. The small processor on your camera takes 1/4 of the points it really saw, and smears them on your viewfinder. It has an algorithm that helps it “guess” how it should look. When you click on your camera’s button, the camera saves information that is made up of a quarter of the picture, and the camera’s zoom in algorithm.

If you don’t use digital zoom, you can save all the information that your camera picked. Later, at home, you can display the picture on your monitor. Most of the graphic programs on PC will have more powerful algorithms to zoom in, and with a large view on the monitor you will be able to control the outcome better.

Optical zoom does matter. A good lens brings good information of a far view to the cells in the camera. This is actually one of the big advantages of digital cameras over film camera. The electronics is so much smaller than a film, that there is no need for huge long lenses. You can have 10 or 12 times optical zoom from a very small camera.

What is the downside? When you try to take a picture from a distance you need a tripod, of a good stabilizer in the camera.

Response Speed

When you turn the camera on it takes some time until you can take a picture. Most times it doesn’t matter, but if you think you will need to draw fast - check this number.

Video capability

Most digital cameras can take short video movies. The length of these movies depends on the amount of memory you have, normally no more than a few minutes. The quality of these movies is not as good as the quality taken by video cameras, and some digital cameras don’t allow zoom in or out while shooting video.

Interchangeable lenses

This is rather new, and now dropping in price. Until not long ago, these cameras were very expensive. Now, the Nikon D50, for example is coming to the $500-$600 price range.

Recommended Cameras

New cameras with better features are announced by the manufacturers every day. A great site that keeps track of all this is: http://www.dpreview.com/

Weight Loss: FAQ

March 21st, 2006

As my weight loss web sites gain more popularity, I find myself answering more and more emails with questions about various weight loss programs and other diet tips. I have noticed that many of these questions about weight loss are very similar to one another. Therefore, I have put together a list of the ten most frequently asked questions about diets and weight loss

1. What is the best diet plan or weight loss program? My answer to this is simple…any diet that provides all the nutrition that you need for health, and in addition, provides fewer calories than your body burns.  While this may not be the answer you wanted to hear, the fact is there is no one weight loss program that is best for everyone, you must research the various weight loss plans and find the one that is best for you. Just make sure your diet is a healthy diet.

2. How much should I weigh? Your doctor can answer that question most accurately. More important than how much you weigh is your body mass index (bmi), which measures your height against your weight. There are plenty of free bmi calculators all over the internet.

3. How can I keep off the weight that I lose? The best way to lose weight is gradually. Most weight loss experts would agree that 1-2 pounds per week is the best rate to lose weight. If you lose weight gradually and re-educate both yourself and your body about food, you’ll have a good start. The secret to keeping weight off is to balance your energy needs with your food intake. Eat enough calories to supply your body’s energy needs, but not so many that your body stores the excess as fat.

4. What is the connection between obesity and diabetes? Obesity increases the risks of a number of chronic health conditions, and diabetes is one of them. People who are more than ten percent overweight increase their risk of developing type 2 diabetes substantially.

5. How do I decrease my intake of sugar? Obviously, you can decrease your intake of sugar by cutting out sweets and refined snacks, but you should also watch out for ‘hidden’ sugars. Check ingredients. High fructose corn syrup and sucrose are both simple sugars that add lots of calories and little nutrition.

6. How often should I weigh myself? Most diet experts recommend that you weigh yourself no more than once a week. Some go so far as to tell you to throw out the scale entirely! Personally, I think that people who are trying to lose weight should focus less on what they weigh. Yes, I know that sounds strange, but people who are trying to lose weight should focus on how they look and feel more than how much they weight. A more accurate measure of your weight loss is your clothing size. If your clothing is feeling looser, you’re doing great.

7. Do I really have to exercise? YES! The truth is it will be a lot harder to lose weight if you do not exercise. A half hour of moderate exercise daily is the minimum activity level for healthy weight loss. You can get it walking, running, cleaning your house - anything active burns calories.

8. What’s a calorie? A calorie is a measure of energy. Foods are rated with calories based on the amount of energy they provide to the body when consumed.

9. Can I lose weight without changing my diet? The best weight loss results happen when you burn more calories than you consume. If you only need to lose a small amount of weight and your diet is generally healthy, you can lose weight by increasing your activity level to burn more calories. If your diet is poor, or if you’re more than a few pounds overweight, you really need to learn a new, more healthy way of eating, or you’ll put the weight back on when you go back to ‘normal’ eating.

10. What are the best all around diet foods? The diet foods mentioned below are five of the best diet foods that should be included as part of any weight loss program and diet plan. 1. Whole Grain Breads 2. Fish 3. Spinach 4. Olive Oil 5. Pink Grapefruit

Speed Up Your Slow PC

March 21st, 2006

Background programs running:

This is the biggest reason and can be fixed quickly and for free… it’s possible that your computer may have so many background programs running simultaneously that there is not enough resources to run normally.

The end result of this is that your computer begins to run more and more slowly over time as you add other programs.

There are two remedies, get Anti-Spyware and use the feature which allows you to view running programs and to disable any of those running programs. Or, if you like to get into your system with your bare hands, use the remedy below.

How to disable unneeded background programs:

All icons in your computer’s system tray are background programs using memory. There are more, but you will get a hint from that system tray. To see and exit all running background programs:

Windows 95 - ME

a. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time.

b. Click any program or task except Explorer or Systray,

c. and then click End Task.

Repeat steps b and c to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray which are necessary components of Microsoft Windows.

You should now have a clean system. See if the computer runs like it used to… if it does, you will want to prevent those programs from restarting the next time you start the computer.

If you don’t want any background programs starting when you restart the system, and you know what you are doing, you can run msconfig from the run menu and completely disable what you find in the ‘Startup’ tab. If you aren’t that experienced and you want a safe way to disable all those unneeded background programs, get the remedy recommended for the spyware on this page. It has a feature allowing you to disable startup programs safely.

Windows XP through 2003 Server

a. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time.

b. Choose ‘Task Manager’ tab to view and end any running programs.

c. disabling these programs will require that you change their startup properties in the ‘Administrative Tools’ area of your system. The Windows Help menu will walk you though that process if you search ‘disable programs’ in your help section.

Spyware:

Many kinds of software add themselves to your system start menu without even asking your permission. Sometimes you will click on a link or visit a hacker website that installs spyware on your computer without you knowing. NOAWARE (http://www.noadware.net/?hop=greenberet) is the best fix that I have found. and its free to try.

Fragmented hard drive:

This results from programs being loaded and deleted. Run the Window’s hard drive defragmenter (Defrag) once a month. It is under your System Tools menu. Your computer’s help menu will tell you how to do it.

Other problems: (Possible, but unlikely to cause problems)

You could have old or conflicting Windows device drivers. An example would be you might actually have two entirely different video drivers on your system and Windows could actually be alternately using both of them.

To prevent this problem, First boot the computer in Safe Mode by pressing and holding the F8 key during startup, after the DOS memory check has completed.

While in Safe Mode select Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Devices. Click on all the devices and see if the various drivers have any yellow or red exclamation marks (which indicates a driver conflict) and also determine if there are any duplicate drivers that can be eliminated.

You may have to delete and reload a driver to correct these problems. Duplicate drivers can and should be deleted.

As each new Windows program is installed and uninstalled, it leaves behind parts of itself that can slow down or crash your computer. These are mostly .dlls and other shared files.

It’s also very possible when uninstalling a program that needed Windows system files can be deleted. When your computer asks if you want to uninstall shared files it’s usually safest to say no — even if your uninstall program claims the files are not being used.

Old Windows drivers can be found by booting into Safe Mode, then opening Control Panel/System/Devices and ridding your system of old drivers.

Otherwise, the only real answer to this problem is to pick up ERROR DOCTOR (http://www.errordoctor.com/index.php?hop=greenberet&ss=errordoctor&sp=0) or just reload Windows into a new directory which eliminates all old junk and leftover files. Reloading Windows is something to do last, as you will also have to reload all your Windows settings, drivers, and programs.

You could be lacking system memory - The only time this may be a problem is if you have an older system and upgraded your operating system without adding some more memory. You should probably upgrade to 256 or 512MB or more of system memory, while it isn’t free, it isn’t very expensive like it was at one time.

How to Write Funny Ideas

March 21st, 2006

People are always curious as where do humorists get their wacky ideas all the time. Once awhile you may hit upon a funny line or silly joke, but to churn out an endless stream of funny ideas is no joke(no pun intended).

So, where and how do the professional comedy writers do it? It’s all up in the head and the deep secret is the thinking process. The combination of creativity and imagination is the first step that will lead your thoughts to the funny finish.

To be imaginative and creative, you got to let your mind wander freely and illogically even to absurdity. Don’t be inhibited. Many a times, the best joke appeared in the most unexpected combination.

Here are five techniques which you can generate humorous ideas:

1. Incongruity - by pairing of opposites or contrasts.

2. Reverse - by switching or reverting of situations.

3. Similarity - by pairing of the same or similar things, person or situations

4. Words - by using puns, oxymorons, cliches and figure of speech

5. Switches - by using others’ideas only as a starting point.

These are the four essential elements of humor:

1. Surprise - unexpected twist to the ending

2. Realism - truth or logic that can be related to or recognised

3. Exaggeration - simple distortion to the extent of absurdity

4. Victim - the butt of the joke

Avoiding Crime When Parking Your Car

March 21st, 2006

Theft and Vandalism

- Wherever possible, provide each dwelling with its own locked garage within the
property boundaries. Locked garages outside the boundaries or well-lit and
visible common car parks are the next best things.

- Where private garages are not feasible, carport or driveway parking is
preferable to grouped parking away from dwellings.

- As a general rule, underground or multi-story car parks should be avoided, as
they are breeding grounds for vandalism and crime. If they already exist,
limiting entry points and providing them with sturdy locked gates could minimize
danger. Alternatively, each resident could be provided with locked gates could
minimize danger. Alternatively each resident could be provided with a lockable
garage in their own space, with robust, vandal-proof metal doors - garages
within garages, so to speak. Or users can be provided with a secure lock or a
plastic keycard, which operates electronic doors.

- Grouped car parks should be avoided in high-crime areas. If they cannot be
avoided, they should be within view of some dwellings; they should be equipped
with sturdy gates or tilt doors, and should never be sited near alleyways.

- Open car parks should be small and within view of dwellings and visitors’ car
parks should be clearly identifiable, well lit, and visible from dwellings.

Rape, Assault, Robbery

- To make car parks safer, planners should provide direct access from parking
areas to the entrance of dwellings.

- Car parks should be no further than 60 meters from dwellings, and the path
should be well lit and free from shrubbery.

- Visitors’ car parks should be well lit, clearly identifiable, and visible from
dwellings.

- Access to enclosed car parks should be limited to residents by some form of
electronic entry control device if possible.

- If it is desirable to limit access to dwellings, make sure access via car
parks is monitored as well.

- In high-crime areas, advanced technological surveillance methods may be needed
in car parks. For example, an infrared unit is available which detects the
presence of intruders - but not cats and dogs - by body heat, and automatically
switches on all lights in the car park and turns them off after 15 to 20
minutes.

Car Audio Mistakes

March 21st, 2006

Choosing a new car audio system can be tricky business. Most people make many
mistakes when choosing their car audio system. Below are the most frequent
mistakes made my car owners in choosing a new system.

Many people just spend too much and in some cases go into debt. What can make this particular situation worse is that people go into debt for a system they
realize they do not even like. First, figure out how much money there is
available to spend. Then decide how much of the car audio system needs to be
replaced. At this point plan a budget – how much can you afford to spend?
Therefore you can locate system components in your price range. Deciding what is
most important in the car audio system and plan to spend more on the important
items. Going over budget is the first and most common mistake car audio system
buyers make.

Another thing to consider is how much of the car is going to need to be modified
for your potential choices. For example some speaker installation will require
many modifications to be made to the car. Modifications will need to be made by
a professional and therefore you will have to budget into the total cost of the
car audio system parts as well as labor. Another car audio systems mistake is
that the owner of the car does not think about the future. How long are you
going to keep the car for? Will you sell the car with the new audio system or
will you remove it before sale? Remember audio systems never increase the value
of a car enough to balance what was spent on the audio system in the first
place. Also, if you plan on remove the system before you sell the car that could
be problematic. Having a radio and an audio system are high priorities when
people are searching for a new car to buy.

When and for what do you use the car for? If the car sees a lot of use as well
as wear and tear then buying higher quality components like speakers is a great
idea. Understandably if you are spending more time in your car then at home you
want to make sure it is as comfortable and entertaining as possible. However, if
the car is only used for weekly shopping, low end parts are more appropriate.

Another car audio system mistake people make is choosing a system which is not
appropriate for the type of music they listen too. This is probably the most
important factor which should influence the choice of the right car audio
system. If the music that you enjoy is strong bass beats then a high end power
amplifier is needed. Also, subwoofers would also be a good choice. However, if
your music choice is at the opposite end of the music range then you will need a
different audio system setup. For example, if you listen to classical music or
trendy pop music, you will need to get a car audio that has a strong speaker
system that offer even play of the sound spectrum.

Playing It Safe in Online Dating

March 21st, 2006

Because the online dating scene, like everything else in the Internet, is a borderless world, it’s hard therefore for people to segregate those whom they should avoid from those whom they would love to meet, date and maybe even have a relationship with. But the possibility of meeting future stalkers and other psychotics shouldn’t deter you from online dating. Rather, it’s important that you just play it safe in online dating.

How to Play It Safe in Online Dating

Good question. Although following our tips to play it safe in online dating to the letter won’t guarantee eternal and 100% protection from the people that no one would ever consider dating, following them would at lease severely decrease the chances of having an encounter with those people.

Never Give Out Your Real Identity

Ideally, yes, it’s nice to start things with whomever it is you’re dating online with openness and honesty but let’s face it – if you’re only dating him online, you still don’t know him that much. Married couples after all still end up divorcing each other because it’s only when they’re living under roof that realize they don’t actually get along that well.

And so, to be on the safe side, never give out your real identity by revealing your real name or using it as a screen name – by then it wouldn’t be a screen name, anyway – on the off chance that the person you’re dating online would turn out to be schizophrenic or something equally horrible.

Never Give Out Anything inside Your Wallet

Okay, let’s review – what’s usually inside your wallet? Driver’s license, credit cards, money, other identification papers and so on. Now, here’s the thing. I’ve already advised you against giving out your real identity, right? Well, here are more restrictions.

Refrain from giving out details of your credit card, the address of your workplace and your home as well as your phone number because who knows if they’ll use these details for unwanted purposes?

Hence, no matter what they say, no matter how reasonable their explanations are, it’s ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.

Never Be Rude

Since online dating doesn’t require people to see each other eye to eye, many tend to be more aggressive and outgoing than they really are, which is good, because opening up would let people know you better. There are, however, people who also tend to be ruder than they usually are when online dating on the simple premise that they don’t have to be careful of what they say since they wouldn’t see the person they’re talking to anyway.

Wrong way of thinking! In online dating, that’s how the fights start and these could always escalate to more violent forms of disagreement. Online dating doesn’t give any of us an excuse to be rude so when you meet someone you dislike, simply excuse yourself and log off.
