A total of 1,310 have passed out of the 6,364 law graduates (20.58% passed) that took the September 2008 bar examinations.

now, people, pls refrain from lambasting UP. topping the bar, etc. shouldn’t be the only gauge with which we measure a lawyer’s competence. if i may say so, social advocacy and integrity should be the criteria; these are more paramount. in the states, they don’t tell you your rank. if at all, d us state bars report only the grade point for the inter-state practice.

it should not come as a surprise that the numero uno is from SSC: the best prepared barrister tops the exams

i got accepted to both up and ateneo but for economic considerations i enrolled at up.
my consti teacher would tell us that topping the bar shouldn’t define who you are. but when he once privileged up law as on top of the food chain and called ateneo as “that law-school wanna be in makati” and san beda as “that law review center in mendiola”, it irked me.

lawyering should not be adversarial. lawyers should not privilege themselves, othering other professionals in the process. life is about interaction and collaboration.

to those bashing up, a question. did you try applying to up law? if you did but were not accepted, you’re a hypocrite. if you did apply, did you enroll and finish but by some weird stroke of fate, decide to re-take law school in another institution? if you didn’t, you don’t know what you’re taking about.

obviously i’m a up trained lawyer. in practice, i’ve noticed there are only two categories of lawyers; the good and the terrible. it matters not what law school you went to. there are bad up lawyers and there are good “other school” lawyers. morover, it matters not what their “bar rank” was.

regarding “yabang”. imporatante yang “yabang” na yan. sa litigation, you have to speak confidently and argue persuasively. “yabang” helps. if you find up law “barristers” to be “mayabang”, may dahilan yan. imagine spending your 4th year appearing in courts, sparring with “ill trained” lawyers whose only counter to your jurisprudencially accurate argument is “your honor, intern lang yan”. yayabang ka din.

to the bar passers, congratulations! your hard work paid off. now’s the time to work harder.

* in terms of international recognition, prestige, etc. UP LAW. U of Michigan, UCLA, et. al usually feature alumni who are UP LAW alumni. Some of its alumni graduate on top of their classes in Georgetown U. (Atty. Cuyco), Harvard (Atty. Tan), Yale (Atty. Hilbay), to name a few.
* UP HAS NO MONOPOLY OF INTELLIGENCE. NOR DOES ANY OTHER SCHOOL.
* THOSE WHO DON’T PASS THE UP LAE, THEY ENROL IN ATENEO (IF THEY CAN AFFORD IT) OR IN SAN BEDA
* IF THEY PASS THE UP LAE, ATENEO GRADS ENROL IN UP LAW. A THIRD OF UP LAW STUDENTS COME FROM ATENEO

I have always subscribed to the belief that consistency is excellence.

Law Schools that consistently put 3, 4 or five of their graduates in the top ten, year after year, are for me, excellent law schools. They were willing to pay the unusually exhorbitant price of consistency, catapulting them to high levels of excellence.

I have also observed that the same law schools exhibit high passing averages in the vicinity of 80%, year after year. Again that is consistency, and that is excellence.

HIgh passing averages and multiple places in the top ten consistently year after year, is my criteria for an excellent law school.

I just wish other law schools in the Philippines will set their sights high to these levels.

Bago ka manghusga, suriin mo muna mga pinagsasabi mo,

AT ISA PA, mayabang kami dahil may ipinagyayabang kami. Hindi kami puro hangin, tulad ng ibang bash lang ng bash, pero wala naman ipinagmamalaki.

Mabuti na yung nagsisilbi sa bayan, at nag-iingay sa kalye. Kesa nagsisilbi sa dayuhan at ang pakinabang lang ay tagapasok ng dolyar.

Besides, bakit niyo inaaway ang DLSU, bakit ang ADMU ba may Accounting? Wala naman ah. Law lang nga yata ang course sa Ateneo na may licensure exam requirement eh.

Walang school na may monopoly ng karunungan. Huwag kayong mang-away ng ibang schools.

Hindi lang naman ang Bar Exam ang tanging sumusukat sa galing ng mga estudyante. O kahit board exam. Malay mo, finavor ng mga tanong ang isang tao or malay mo naka-tsamba.

And just for the record too, the last topnotcher of UP na si Joan de Venecia ay sa Ateneo nag undergrad. Meaning sa Ateneo din siya hinulma????

At yung nagsabing finafavor ng mga tanong ay ang mga taong nakatsamba, taon taon ba ganito?

Kasi for the last 15 years, mas mababa lagi passing rate ng UP compared to San Beda and Ateneo.

Sa nagsabing UP teaches law the grand manner, bakit nakakalimutan ata ang basics at marami man lang di makapasa sa BAR which is a basic requirement to become a lawyer?

Kasi daw if you want to pass the BAR exam, go to Ateneo, if you want to become a good lawyer, go to UP????

E how can you become a good lawyer if you cant even qualify to become a plain lawyer in the first place??

Bakit ba nag aaway kayo kung Ateneo, La Salle o UP magaling. Ateneo walang accounting pero ang Law nila number one sa passing rate, 2nd ang San Beda, third ang UP. La Salle walang Law pero number one accounting nila, next is UP, then San Beda. UP may law and accounting pero sa law pangatlo lang sila sa passing rate sa bar, at sa accounting pangalawa.

In my opinion, patas lang lahat yan, nasasa estudyante. Ang San Beda consistent din kahit na college lang. Besides, sa 800 na kinukuha ng San Beda sa 1st year, 50-80 lang nakakatungtong ng 4th year law school dahil mataas ang standards; same in accountancy. Yung mga nag top sa Arellano, UE, Baste, at sa iba pang eskwela sa University belt, yung iba kick outs ng Beda na kung saan sila na train mag aral.

sino ka ba pinyata ka at san ka ba galing na paaralan at ganyan ka magsalita? sa susunod, pag-isipan mo muna sasabihin mo bago ka magsalita. kung hindi mo man marealize na walang bigat yung sinasabi mo, magtanong ka sa iba o manghingi ka ng payo sa mga tao sa paligid mo. magtanong ka sa driver o labandera nyo kung meron kayo dahil baka mas nauunawaan pa nila.
nasubukan mo man lang bang ipahayag ang sarili mo para sa pagbabago? bumoto ka man lang ba? mahirap maisip na naging interesado ka sa thread na ito kung wala kang law interest. at kung isang exam taker o newly passed ka, hindi ko din maisip kung bakit ka ganyan kababaw. ang mahirap sa mga taong tulad mo, maraming taon mula ngayon, hindi pa rin nila alam kung gano sila kababaw at kung ano ang pananagutan nila sa bayan, samantalang maaaring isa ka nang opisyal ng gobyerno na nakuha ang posisyon dahil sa kasikatan at impluwensiya.
kung nanghihinayang ka sa pinambabayad na buwis sa mga mag-aaral ng up na nagrarally LANG kamo, lalo kang manghinayang na nakarating ka sa punto na ito na wala kang natutunan.
bottom line? lumabas ka sa ideyal mong kulungan at damahin ang magaspang na sementong totoong daluyan ng mga maliliit na pakikibaka ng mga mas hindi pinalad na tao kesa sayo. lumingon ka sa paligid mo at baka may tumatawa na din sa mga pinagsasasabi mo. at maging mulat ka sa ano ba talaga ang mahalaga sa lipunan mo.
