Ateneo Blue Eagles wins UAAP 71 championship
The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles have defeated the De La Salle Green Archers 62-51 to win the UAAP 71 men’s basketball championship Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Chris Tiu, led the Eagles with 16 points to capture Ateneo’s fourth UAAP championship and second in the decade after winning in 2002. For DLSU, Casio finished with 21 points, 18 of which came from the three-point line while Rico Maierhoffer was thrown out of the game in the third quarter after he incurred a second technical foul.

Intense ang Araneta kanina. I don’t really care kung sino ang manalo sa dalawang team kasi both of them deserves to be in the Finals and to be a CHAMPION. BUT I think may nangyayaring kababalaghan sa mga REFEREES dahil it’s very OBVIOUS na may kinikilingan sila. LUTO kumbaga. Try to watch the whole game again. Kapag may FOUL dapat sa side ng LASALLE hindi nila tinatawagan kahit na kitang kita naman parang nagbubulagbulagan lang sila. On the other hand kapag sa ATENEO naman, kaunting physical touch or magdikit lang ang players FOUL agad ang DLSU. NAKAKALOKO grabe. Kahit na ATENISTA ako feeling ko hindi pa din just ang game and masasabi ko na hindi kami mananalo kung hindi nawala si Maierhoffer. ATLEAST WE WON pa din. VERY NICE GAME.

Rico really made a fumble by getting too reactive. Casio too wasn’t careful and got into foul trouble in the 3rd. Things may have ended differently had those 2 key players stayed focused. Well, their destinies were in their hands. I guess it was really just Ateneo’s time despite the horrible shooting of Rabeh, Salamat and Jai. Unless Coach Franz finds or somehow reinvents his players, I dont’t think anyone could expect anything spectacular from the La Salle team next year. They really have no more top-gun players. All they have are hyped-up yet mostly inconsistent players. I hope they shape up so that Season 72 will be as exciting and competetive as this one! ONE BIG FIGHT!!!!

1st Q pa lang, not even 2 minutes into the game, 2 fouls na yung tinawag kay Rabeh. That’s why he had to sit it out for a long, long while. Strict lang yung officiating. Hindi naman madaya.
BTW, di ba may nahuling ref na pumanig sa La Salle during the FEU-DLSU game 1? That ref got suspended for the rest of the season! Binili niyo ba yun? Di ba, panalo yung FEU sa DLSU nung 2nd game nila kasi patas na yung officiating? Whoops…I’m stooping to your level. Sorry po. It’s unfair to say all these things. So…quit sour graping. Talo kayo eh. congratulations blue eagles! lasalle gave a good fight but found wanting….rico should’ve stayed in the game if he’s disciplined enough to think for his team. hindi na nga makaporma kay baclao, ang yabang pa….nahawa tuloy yung laro ng buong la salle….casio gave his 100% but he can’t do it all by himself.

A BITTER AFTERTASTE

Basketball fans have never had it so good. In the current break between seasons of the Philippine Basketball Association, there is no dearth of thrilling hoops action as the UAAP and the NCAA has been providing more than ample excitement.
As of this writing, Game 2 of the NCAA Finals between the San Beda Red Lions and the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers was yet to be played but I will surely make it a point to watch, even if my alma mater, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and its knights were unhorsed in the Final Four.
But let’s not get morose here. That’s how the ball games, as they say. You win some, you lose some.
While the Red lions may be favored after their win in Game 1, I have admired the way JRU has played under the able mentorship of Ariel Vanguardia. He deserves a lot of the credit for turning things around for this team. It pains me that it was his cunning and his boys’ determination that caused Letran’s fall, but we all need to accept defeat no matter how bitter it tastes.
Which brings me to the classic UAAP championship battle between Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle University the other night.
It was as expected, another spectacle of a game between the two bitter rivals and naturally, emotions ran high. In the end, Ateneo wrapped it up in two games, sweeping the Archers with their 62-51 win in Game 2.
I thought all along that Coach Norman Black and his boys had the more formidable line-up and were able to hold up under extreme pressure, but La Salle was also talent-laden and was just as motivated. So I held off making predictions when asked by friends on what my take was on that series. It would always be fool-hardy to second guess a game that was to be decided not only by talent, skill and preparation. Too many intangibles also figure in the equation.
It turned out to be as closely-fought and contested as expected and I thought Ateneo won it fair and square. There may have been lapses in the officiating as La Salle Coach Franz Pumaren decried, but those looked more a result of human frailty and did not really dictate the end result.
Of course, Pumaren had all the right to complain and we have also observed the need to professionalize officiating in such high-profile games, even in the collegiate ranks. We have cited before the efforts made by the NCAA in hiring PBL referees thus putting a premium on officiating.
But what provided a bitter after taste to an otherwise exhilarating evening was the failure (refusal?) of La Salle to claim the 2nd place trophy during the closing ceremonies. I can understand the disappointment, dejection and all-around grief that muddles a juvenile’s decision-making in the aftermath of such a loss. But I’m sure there were more mature personalities in their organization that could have provided the voice of reason.
Basketball is a sporting event and the object of an inter-school competition is to promote well-being and give all those involved, especially the studentry, the thrill of competition and absorb the effects thereof. These are valuable lessons that are to fortify them for the greater battles ahead in the game called life. And that includes accepting a loss with dignity and honor.
Sadly, this was not the case during the awarding ceremonies and many were sorely disappointed at the display of unsportsmanlike behavior. At the very least, it sent the wrong message to the legion of young minds that were glued to the event.
I hope Coach Pumaren and La Salle officials have a good explanation for the unfortunate incident. They owe it to the public, especially to the young.

Not going out and recieving the runner up trophy was a foul move from Lasalle.

The fact is pikon lang kayo kasi talo kayo. And there’s nothing honest nor decent about that. Maierhoffer did what he did kasi alam niyang malabo na yung chances niyong manalo nun. He bailed to save face! Malamang utos pa ni Franz yun e. Alam niyang mangyayari tong ganito. He gave La Salle an excuse for their sorry defeat. Now, La Salle can always say, “E, kung di lang natanggal si Rico e…”.
Ako, I take my hat off to JV Casio. Matinik siya and he plays fair. It’s his efforts (yung iba, swapang e!) that got La Salle its finals seat. And he did his very best for his team. But what Pumaren, Maierhoffer, Webb and Ferdinand (ang ga-gwapo no?!) did, marred whatever UAAP legacy JV should have. Sayang e.
So remember this, the next time you claim na niluto yung laro, thank Maierhoffer! He fixed it so that you CAN say that.
