Baguio bans Candy Pangilinan for Igorot joke
The Baguio City council on Friday declared comedienne Candy Pangilinan as “persona non grata” by a majority vote.
Councilor Tomas Balisong said that the declaration was in reaction to Pangilinan’s remark during her pre-Mother’s Day show at SM Baguio last Saturday, May 9 where she reportedly greeted the crowd with “Tao po ako, hindi po ako Igorot.”
This means that the comedienne is now banned from going to the summer capital and her movies are also banned from being shown in the city’s theaters.
Candy has posted apology after apology to tell those who cried foul when she actually meant “Igorot statue.” She admitted not being able to say the word “statue,” but that was what she really meant. To prove this, Pangilinan’s group is planning to launch a fund-raiser to benefit Cordillerans.

I am not an Igorot but I belong to one of the Cordilleran groups. I think that she really meant to say those words she said because she said it TWICE. Siguro kung yung pangalawa, sinabi nya yung “statue”, medyo okay pa eh. Pero hindi. So I think it is agreeable that her movie should be banned in Baguio. Even yung pagpunta nya dun. She doesn’t deserved to be there. She is definitely not welcome sa Baguio. People in Cordillera do not deserve these kind of words from anyone no matter where they come from. Where ba ang province ni Candy? What if someone will say those words sa lugar nila? Do you expect her ka-province to react happily? Course not! Hirap kasi sa kanya, puro sha bibig.

Well, para sa akin…uo nga at nagkamali si candy pangilinan and the damage has been done on part of Igorots pero kapag sinsero naman ang tao sa paghingi ng tawad…parang hindi rin kayo naiiba sa kanya. Saan ba nya sinabi yung “Tao po ako, hindi ako igorot”….. depende kasi sa crowd ng manunuod yun, kung pinapanuod lang yun sa sa kokonting venue at kayo kayo rin ang nanunuod, although masakit ngang tanggapin pero hindi ganun kasakit kasi konti lang yung nanunuod. Pero kung national tv or magazine nya sinabi yun e talagang mahihirapan silang patawarin like sa nangyari sa BBC at kay chip tsao na sobrang marami ang nakbasa at nanuod. Actually wala kaming alam sa balitang yan, kasi kung hindi nila ibinalita e hindi namin malalaman na meron pala syang sinabing ganun. Ngayon….kung tao sila (sorry for the term) you should take to consider forgiveness kasi hayop lang ang hindi nagpapatawad. don’t misinterprete me….I am no against igorots, i am against for what they did not forgive to the person na nagsisisi naman.

hi tipitipitim…..Im a full blooded igorot and i find your comment very well said but sad to say its out of context….mind if i ask? you said you do not know anything about that incident at nabalitaan mo lamang….then why react? is it not proper to know the full details first so that you wont be asking questions and would just jump into conclusion? furthermore……you were saying that “depende kung sino at gaanu karami ang crowd….etc” …..so are you trying to say na ok lang magsabi ng statement na ganoon?????? and about the forgiveness…..may binanggit ba na di siya pinapatawad sa ginawa niya????? this was an excerpt of what the Congressman of Baguio City told about the incident ” Domogan accepted Pangilinan’s apology but said that it is no longer within his control if the others decide to file a complaint against her” so precisely pinatawad naman siya but “she needs to learn her lesson”….even at home….pag nagkakamali ang anak natin….pinagsasabihan natin siya or even pinapalo pa para matuto siya….pero di nangangahulugan na di natin siya pinapatawad sa kamalian niya……….

I am a Filipino belonging to the igorot tribe……For those saying “para iyon lang ang sinabi” nag-oover react na kau….etc…etc….Still remember Chip Tsao, a hongkong columnist describing Philippines as a nation of servants? how did you react on that? im pretty sure, sinabi din ninyo na “its a racist remark…blah blah blah!!!!!!!….isnt it that the filipinos were outraged by this kind of remark… and now here comes a fellow filipino issuing unmindful, insensitive, sarcastic, careless and irresponsible statement to fellow filipinos…..when she told “akala nyo Igorot ako, hindi ako Igorot, tao po ako!” those were the exact words she uttered not just once but twice…. how are we supposed to interpret that?????…when someone would say, i am not tall..it would mean short.. i am not beautiful would mean otherwise, i supposed..unless not tall should be understood as ugly and not beautiful would mean short in height (lol)…so in other words, when she referred to herself as tao, then definitely she implied that igorots are not human…and anyone with logic would know that……….now the reason for declaring her as persona non grata is this: to “educate Ms. Pangilinan and others like her,” “It is believed that the statement of Candy Pangilinan that Igorots are not members of the homo sapiens displays an unmitigated bigotry and her total ignorance of the ethno-linguistic groups of her native country which is discriminatory and unpatriotic and should be condemned by peace-loving Filipinos,” the resolution also states. This provision of the ordinance declares as unlawful for any person or entity to produce, present reports or advertisements in print, broadcast, electronic, film, or other forms of media including stage shows that degrade or treat indigenous women and children as inferior beings or subject them to humiliation….IN SHORT, MS PANGILINAN VIOLATED SUCH CODE WHEN SHE UTTERED SUCH WORDS RIGHT BEFORE THE EYES OF THE IGOROT AUDIENCE….. Well…for me…I am not an Igorot but I live here in baguio…dito na ako pinanganak and dito na ako lumaki…so that makes me an Igorot by place… Tama nga naman yun.. Napaka-over sensitive at over reacted lang ang mga igorot o talagang hambog lang. Si ms. pangilinan is known as commediene her jokes is wether you like it, love it or hate it but it is still a joke. You must move on mga taga-baguio….there’s a lot of things to do in your province like gang war ng mga kabataan. Yun ang madalas naming mabalitaan dyan hindi yang isyung ganyan.

Since a well known “commediene” Candy really is, I would assume she is a well-rounded, well-read and well-aware about mentioning sensitive stuff specially ethnicity issues regardless of race. If she would be as smart as few people, not a lot, but few people would know she would be, she shouldn’t even bother saying that remark. It was completely distasteful and did hurt a lot, even non-Igorot pinoys. No offense to the respectable “commediene” though.

I think what people don’t understand is that unlike most Filipinos from other provinces (tagalog, kapampangan, etc.), Igorots have experienced a long history of being the butt of jokes and being the center of a lot of misconceptions. It does seem like we are being a tad bit sensitive to what Ms. Pangilinan said, but you have to understand how defensive we have become from constant jabs at our culture ever since we could remember.
As you would have noted by now, I am an Igorot. I was born and bred in Baguio and went to elementary and high school there. And even when we were in Baguio, kids would tease others kids by saying “Igorot!” as an insult. I would often hear people talking in the jeep saying things like “mukhang igorot yung magnanakaw.” When I went to college in UP Manila where the brightest brains of the country were supposed to be, I got asked questions like “totoo bang igorot ka?” or some increduluos story they’ve heard that igorot people do. Another teacher once described that the cerebellum looked like old igorot women with their deep wrinkles, and I’m sure everyone knows about that President who said igorots have tails. What is my point in citing all these? For decades people have thrown the word “igorot” as some kind of comic relief or part of a derogatory statement and we have taken it without complaint but we are getting very tired of it.
You know in the movies how they have war veterans who get startled by a door slamming because they have been traumatized by shootings and bombings. It’s exactly the same with Igorots. We have been traumatized by direct and indirect insults here and there, all our lives that as a culture, we hear someone say something seemingly as “innocent” as Candy said and we just lose it. So all I am asking for is a little understanding . Try to see where we’re coming from. And next time you mention the word “igorot” have a long hard think about how you use it.
As for forgiveness, I have already forgiven Candy for what she said, but it will be hard to forget.

richard……i feel sad for you….cause u do not know what you are saying….are you not aware that you can find in the igorot land the so-called summer capital of the phils, salad bowl of the phils, the famous and very beautiful banaue rice terraces that used to be the eighth wonder of the world, the beautiful sagada caves and other tourist spots and beautiful sceneries? how could igorots be “mukhang pera” when our land is one of the leading producer of gold and other mineral deposits, vegetables, strawberries, brooms, wood carvings…..etc…etc…. aside from being known as one of the center of educational excellence? we also employ non-igorots and we treat them with utmost respect irrespective of who they are….why not ask the non-igorots who are residing here what kind of life we igorots have…..kagaya nga po ng sinabi ng kapwa ko igorot, wala pong patatas, beans, carrot, cauli flower, repolyo, strawberries etc….kung walang igorot….but anyhow…..NAPAKALAKI NG PASASALAMAT KO DAHIL NAGING IGOROT AKO!!!!

I agree with egoroots in terms of politicians not making a big deal of it. Just let it go. However, I do think that it is absolutely wonderful that Igorots everywhere got up and defended our race. 20 years ago we would not have said anything. We would just let people make jokes about us and let them walk all over us. But now that we have all let our anger out, let us put this matter to rest. It is a good learning opportunity for Filipinos to respect each other and be sensitive to different cultures. To my fellow igorots, let our kindness and wisdom shine in this unpleasant incident.

OMG! para yun lang joke na yun ginawa nyo nang isyu. Nagsorry na nga yung tao kasi nalaman nya na nagkamali sya at nagpapakumbaba naman. hambog na nga sigurong matatawag ang mga igorots kasi kala nila untouchables and nobody have the rights to have mistakes onto them. For your info there’s a lot of ethnic groups who suffered this kind of discrimination like aeta in zambales and mangyan in Mindoro but they ignored it because there are more things to do than outcrying their sentiments. I have high respect to our ethnic group. For me when someone is asking for forgiveness and said he/she won’t do it again, i accept his/her apology like GOD who always did for us.

Well, kapampangan ako at hindi Igorot but while I was reading the sentiments of our Igorot brothers and sisters, halos maiyak ako sa naramdaman kong pasion about the issue. Fine, she was joking, kaya lang it was a VERY BAD joke and yes, she asked for forgiveness, but she needs to face the consequences para mas maging sincere ung view niya about what she did. Wala na tayong absolute identity, silang mga filipinos sa ethnic groups na lang ang meron so please think twice before you say further hurtful comments. If we cant offer sympathy, let’s just ZIP it. We have no right to defend CANDY unless we’re one of the Igorots that heard the joke and surprisingly appreciated it instead. Overreacting means demanding that Candy be electrocuted which is not the case. Dont you think so? I love Baguio and its people. Without Igorots, I wont feel that I am a genuine Filipino because of the proud Spanish culture and American culture that we’ve gotten accustomed to here in Angeles City.
Please be understanding of other people’s emotions. Let’s not put our co-Filipinos down. Instead, let’s stand proud because we were not completely captured by those Spaniards because of them!

And on a lighter side, I forgot to add, kanya kanyang paniniwala yan sa food. I am on an ovo-lacto diet but it doesnt mean that all those that eat vegetables and meat are bad for me. Hindi porke we dont eat dogs e we’re better people. There is always a trade-off nmn… Cheers guys I just felt you’re overstepping your bounds. You may be right because you dont see things from their end but it doesnt mean that we should attack them like that. We’re not being sensitive to their emotions which makes us less of a human. They are reacting to it which is very sound and normal. Too much or not – not for us to judge. Afterall, they did not sue Candy or threw stones at her so why should we also overreact on their reactions??? Now let’s worry about the attack made by a Hollywood Actor recently to us Filipinos. Let’s have our bros and sis deal with Candy’s fault while we take care of the international issue.

Even some prisoners did not intentionally commit crimes on which they were jailed of but why are they still locked inside the prison cell???? why the words “hindi ko po sinasadya, nagsisisi na po ako..etc…” will not free them from serving the punishment for what they did? why??????or maybe GOSH and gosh alike have the answer? or even the mighty power to pardon them and release them from jail??….HE HE HE

yeah i got your point but there’s a different levels of crime, there’s a crime that are unintentionally and intentinally commited, like murder which a man has a plan to kill that person and there’s a crime that commited to defend himself which is unintentionally. Although it’s the same crime but unintentional crime is forgivable. And punishment is not absolute for all kinds of crimes for which i think only human implemented punishment but GOD has the unconditional forgiveness.

im not an igorot. but i live here in baguio for almost a year.. half of my friends were igorot and half of it were not. we shared experiences and moments, all i can say is that, igorot were very hospitable. in connection of what candy said, you have just stabbed the igorots, after all the hospitality they showed to you..

but now we’re here and we want to be heard… like most torogis of today (that means ALL igorots, by blood or those of you who have come to love the torogi way, which is cool btw), we are now educated, sophisticated and all that crap. we even dress better than most (as long as jackets, coats and sweaters are involved anyway). only politicians desperate for a measly vote and those who make additional income through souvenir pictures are the only ones who wear the bahag now.
So what if I eat dog meat? I really enjoy the taste because there’s nothing like it. Even when I worked for a big ass Makati firm, I always made sure that somehow I could fit a vacation somewhere together with the weekend so I could go home and eat at Comiles or at Ester’s in Slaughter Compound. I even took my British supes one time and they still ask me about it even if I’m not working for them anymore.
People who say things about the “dugyotness” of igorots and the like sometimes are just in “defensive mode”, if you will (just like us when “jokes” about our ethnicity come up). They just can’t handle the fact that some dog-eating, bahag-wearing torogi from up in the mountains are better than them. Hell, they even think they can out-drink us. “Washing nga dagus, han pay lang nagrugi ti inum”.
The next time anybody says anything about your ethnicity, think first before you react. It is most likely they are threatened by you more than they are looking down at you. Don’t stoop to their level.

it breaks my heart to know that despite the fact that efforts are being made to erradicate racism and cultural boundaries this new issue arises. I am PROUD to say I AM A FULL BLOODED IGOROT and though I was raised in the city and inculcated with modern values and beliefs I still look back to where I came from. I do forgive Candy Pangilinan for those words she said but every action has its consequence. I hope everyone learned a lesson from this. Our showbiz personalities in particular should realize the impact they have in our communities. It’s important to have RESPECT FOR OTHERS and RESPONSIBILTY FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS.

Huwag na lang natin pansinin ang mga nakikisawsaw na walang masabing maganda at patuloy na magpasalamat at basbasan ang mga nakakaunawa at sumusuporta sa atin. Pag humupa na mga galit natin, huwag din nating kalimutang ipagpatuloy ang mabuhay ng marangal at makatao upang makamit natin ang pangarap nating pagkilala ng ibang tao sa ating lahi. Ipagpatuloy natin ang pakikitungo ng maayos sa ating mga katrabaho at pagpapaliwanag sa mga kakilala at makikilala pa natin ang kahalagahan ng respeto sa kapwa. Makakatulong ito para hindi na maulit ang mga ganitong pangyayari sa buhay natin. Work harder, give out respect, and continue to protect our dignity in a peaceful, loving, and non-violent way. I am happy that we are one in this endeavor. I am doing my part in educating my students here in Laguna about our culture and lovely tradition…I know we can make it…someday, we will be known as people who deserve utmost respect and love. you know why this issue does not die so easily? simply because candy hurt not just one but the entire igorots……..and i have something for everyone to ponder:
Forgiveness is not ignoring the wrong
Forgiveness does not mean looking the other way as if hurts and injustices have not happened. We cannot deny evil or even try to tolerate it without confrontation. In Lewis Smedes book Forgive and Forget he states: “There is no real forgiveness unless there is first relentless exposure and honest judgment. When we forgive evil, we do not excuse it, we do not tolerate it. We look evil full in the face, call it what it is, let its horror shock and stun and enrage us, and only then do we forgive it.”
There is a false concept that if there is true forgiveness then we will forget the wrong. This is not feasible or healthy. The key is to be healed in such a way that we can remember the event but it does not have power over us. That is a powerful way of living. Also, if we were to forget the wrong, we would not gain wisdom and would put ourselves in harm’s way all over again.
LONG LIVE THE IGOROTS AND BE THANKFUL CAUSE WE WERE ENDOWED WITH WIT AND EXCEPTIONAL LOGIC…

There is no such thing as small or big sin, intentional or unintentional crime…all are the same…otherwise, there would have been an eleventh commandment stating exemptions to the 10 commandments….say, you are allowed to kill when done without intentions…??? it clearly said, never kill….God’s love is unconditional but not for forgiveness….cause in oder for him to forgive us, we must also learn to forgive others….and by the way, its not only unintentional crime that could be forgiven…even those done intentionally could also be….. crime is something to be paid of, no matter what the intention is…. else, we would always justify that its just right to do wrong…

i am an igorot by birth and by heart, at first tlgang sobra kming nsktan and sino ba naman ang tao na hindi marunong masaktan but i also beliv that time heal it’s wound….. dpat din nting maintindhan ang dmdmin ng taong nsktan and normal lang po ung reactions nila but igorots are not the kind of people na nagtatanim ng galit to the max and they only defend theirselves…….. Decades of year that igorots were subject to discrimination and until now despite the modern life, advance knowledge and the growing population not only Christians but all religious groups who believe in God, now im thinking that names i mentioned above are not learned, ignorant , backward, uneducated, and dishonest. The verses proves point that all creatures are good for food if received with thanksgiving. It does not say, as some try to make it say, that every creature allowed by the food ordinances is good. Nowhere in the context does Paul refer to the Levitical ordinances concerning clean and unclean food.
There is a tradition that states that we Christians should obey all of the food ordinances. The New Testament clearly says that we are no longer subject to the food ordinances. Those who claim we are still bound by those ordinances must take the scripture and contort it to make it say what they wish.
What we eat or don’t eat is not the important thing. The Kingdom of God is not concerned with those things but with righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. As long as we serve Christ whatever we eat or do not eat is acceptable to God.

Baguio City drops racial

BAGUIO CITY: The Baguio City council has forgiven comedienne and TV actress Candy Pangilinan for a racial slur she inadvertently uttered in public during a mall show early last month.
The withdrawal of the said resolution and acceptance of her apology came as a surprise to Pangilinan, to her mother Dori and to her crew as their intention was to come to Baguio to issue a public apology.
Pangilinan said she was first hesitant to come up to Baguio because of possible untoward incidents, but she and her crew were surprised that she was warmly welcomed first by Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. before she appeared to the city council.

To rally and rally:
out of all the comments i have read from here, i found your’s as the most distasteful. you Know what ,i had lived in many parts of the philippines and found from every group of people far worst than what you have described! i say not to all but there it exist. however when i see among the tagalogs or bisayas or other lowlanders such base characteristics i never account it to their entire ethnic group. I’ve been in the cordilleras lately and let me share what i observed. Hypocrisy, which is very common in the lowlands is rare.People are better educated, eat better foods and sleep in more comfortable beds and many more. Generally speaking, if you compare the lives of common igorots against those of the lowlands you will see the former are more blessed with the basic necessities of life.

I cannot fathom why other people cant understand the igorot feeling on the issue. look, we cry foul if we are discriminated by foreign people yet we tolerate the same when thrown to us by our own kind? we say She said sorry already yet do we really understand human feelings? do you think forgiveness for blunder of this nature is automatic? For the mere asking for it? Do you have the guts to embrace tsip tsao right after he said sorry? Or did you need time to cool it down? (not unless you have no feeling at all) i do agree ms Pangilinan deserves forgiveness whether or not she is sincere, ( something we cannot be sure of) and many igorots have expressed it already but complete pacification of hurt feelings dies naturally and takes time. Why are we so insensitive about other peoples feelings? my suggestion is let the feeling dies out naturally, you can never force it. And this is a challenge to the really educated mind, will you prevent such blunder from repeating itself and defend the very subjects of it? or will you be among the effective tools of Satan in his battle against human equality in the eyes of God? until we learn not to belittle anyone, until we regard other people as our equal, we cant be called learned or even civilized. We can never claim real belief in God.
by the way kudos to the non igorots who do understand. You have the spirit of a real filipino. Our Country needs more people like you guys! may your tribe in crease.

If we read articles and books of foreign authors about filipinos, we generally notice biased treatment. But there are a number of articles and books written by non filipinos especially Americans who treat the igorot filipinos with respect and admiration. I wonder why our government and educational system does nothing to educate shamelessly ignorant filipinos. I wonder how filipinos don’t see what the Americans had seen and praised about igorots.
I’ve also browsed some books about igorots by an American author in Benguet state university and found it filled with respect and fairness. Such treatment is never alluded to by foreign authors for filipinos in general.

nabasa nako imong comment, tsada kaayo i admire you a lot. Im a full blooded igorot but i had lived in mindanao long enough that i mastered cebuano.
I like it when i see pilipinos defend their kind and feel deeply hurt when foreigners belittle us. But as you have said its more excruciating to find other filipinos discriminate their own countrymen.

i’m not an igorot, pero i understand kung ano man naramdaman nila. Candy is an icon, though sikat siya locally, she has the right to joke around, pero NO RIGHT TO INSULT OTHER PEOPLE. kahit sabihin niyang joke lang yun. before anything else, sana nag-isip muna siya kung nasa matinong pag-iisip siya kung may masasaktan siyang tao. at sana inalam niya kung nasaan siya. ang daming joke na pwedeng magawa, why like that? sana nag-isip na man lang. lalo lang ito nakasira ng image niya as an icon. igorots are one of the few races na naiwan sa philippine culture. let’s not abandon and disrespect them. wag na nating alisin ang natitirang pagiging pilipino natin. it’s a lesson for everybody to think before you judge. and to think before you talk. look at the people around you. hindi lang naman siya ang tao doon. bumaba tuloy tingin sa kanya ng mga igorots.
be proud that you are an igorot. fight for the right. :)

nakakatawa ka naman rally ng rally masakit ang mga salita mo pero may bahid ng katotohanan yan. ako half igorot ako kase mama ko is igorot natatawa rin aq minsan kapag nag-uusap usap sila parang nagaaway away na yun pala normal lang.. hihihi .. di rin aq masyado close sa cousin ko sa mother’s side kase dahil din dun

Im not igorot i’ve never even in their place but i’ve been in manila, pangasinan mindanao visayas and bicol and know what? lahat ng lugar na yun may mga bastos, marumi, tamad, mabaho! pero i never say mnilans, visayans, pangasinenses are like that. it is wrong to say a group of people is such only because we see some bad things from one or several who belong to that group. get what i mean?
