Respected Mexican journalist Eduardo Garcia who runs a financial Web site called Sentido Comun (Common Sense), says there is no doubt that Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu has finally captured the coveted richest person in the world title, following a surge in America Movil’s shares over the second quarter.

This is estimated to have boosted his fortune to an estimated $67.8B – equivalent to 8% of Mexico’s gross domestic product – compared with $59.2B for the Microsoft mogul. Aside from America Movil, Slim controls the INBURSA financial group and the Grupo Carso industrial firm with interests spanning retail stores, coffee shops and restaurants.
