Pepsi, Tropicana, have HIV blood is not true

A rumor that’s been circulating that Pepsi products are contaminated with HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a hoax (not true).

In Malaysia, the SMS or text message said, “for d next few days, do not drink any product from pepsi company like pepsi, tropicana juice, slice, 7up , coca cola, etc,,as a worker from the company has added his blood contaminated with HIV. watch NDtv …please 4ward this 2 every 1 u care about…..ok. Please note seriously.” The rumor has also spread here in the Philippines.

Don’t believe this rumor as it is scientifically proven that HIV cannot be transmitted via food or drinks. Plus Pepsi products are produced according to the strictest safety standards and are safe for consumption according to the company’s representative.

Department of Health (DoH) secretary Enrique Ona said that based on the initial research work of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the local herbal plant Tawa-Tawa “appears” to have “some effects” on rehydration.

“It looks like they [DOST] have already isolated the active ingredient in the plant and it appears that it really has some effect,” he said. Dehydration, aside from hemorrhage, is one of the common causes of death among dengue patients. Dengue survivors who claim they were cured by the plant professed that their blood platelets count increased after drinking boiled water with tawa-tawa leaves. Ona, however, cautioned the public against self-medication, especially in cases of dengue.

The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has created a mosquito trap called OL (Ovicidal-Larvicidal) Trap developed by the ITDI-DOST researchers in a bid to prevent the rise of dengue.

The DOST said that they could not release additional traps or kits to the public because they ran out of containers. What they can give the public are the organic pellets. No Smoking in all Starbucks branches in the Philippines starting June 27

Rustan Coffee Corporation (RCC), the operator of Starbucks in the Philippines, has decided to comply with the no-smoking campaign of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

All previously designated smoking outdoor areas of all Starbucks branches will be converted into non-smoking zones beginning June 27, 2011. So what this means is that you cannot smoke at any Starbucks branch whether inside or outside. They will also start putting up signages to remind their customers of the new policy.

To all those who are asking how to determine if a fish is double-dead or part of the recent fish kill, here are some tips:

1. The eyes of a doule-dead fish are not clear and they are reddish
2. The gills (hasang) are pale. Fresh fish have red gills.
3. When pressed, the flesh of a double dead fish is soft. It should be hard.
4. The scales of a double dead fish are no longer shiny.

The government has warned the public against buying and eating of double-dead fish as it may cause food poisoning and diarrhea.

Smoking cigarettes in major and secondary roads, bus terminals, waiting sheds, schools, hospitals, recreational places and inside public utility vehicles will be prohibited in Metro Manila starting May 30, 2011.

Violators will be slapped with a 500-peso fine or render an eight-hour community service. This development is just a strict implementation of the provisions of Republic Act 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 plus the anti-smoking prohibitions of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

Nestle Philippines is voluntarily recalling their Maggi noodle (beef and chicken) products for possible salmonella contamination.

The multinational firm reportedly found traces of salmonella in two batches of the products. They have also stopped production of all Maggi Rich Mami Noodles pending the completion of the investigation. The first successful pediatric liver transplant by a team of all-Filipino medical team from the newly established Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation of the Medical City was conducted last January 7, 2011.

Three-year-old Catherine Erica Buenaventura who suffered from End-Stage liver disease with complications was the first pediatric patient. The team removed Erica’s entire liver and replacing it with a graft or a portion of her uncle’s liver. According to the president and CEO of Medical City Dr. Alfredo Bengzon, this is the first time a successful pediatric liver transplant has been performed in the Philippines by an all-Filipino medical staff.

The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed the first case of A(H1N1) influenza in the Philippines Thursday night.

The first case is a 10-year-old Filipino female, who also visited Canada when she was in the United States. She showed symptoms – fever, cough, and sore throat – a day after her arrival and was rushed to a hospital. She is currently being treated at an undisclosed medical facility and is now only suffering from a sore throat.

The public is urged to observe proper hygiene, strengthen resistance and are advised to avoid going to crowded areas if the need is not urgent.
