A(H1N1) or swine flu virus now in the Philippines

The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed the first case of A(H1N1) influenza in the Philippines Thursday night.

The first case is a 10-year-old Filipino female, who also visited Canada when she was in the United States. She showed symptoms – fever, cough, and sore throat – a day after her arrival and was rushed to a hospital. She is currently being treated at an undisclosed medical facility and is now only suffering from a sore throat.

The public is urged to observe proper hygiene, strengthen resistance and are advised to avoid going to crowded areas if the need is not urgent.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday said that there are still no reported cases of swine flu among humans in the Philippines.

This after the rising death toll from the Mexican swine flu epidemic that is sending a wave of panic around the world with the United States declaring a public health emergency and other nations ordering border clampdowns.

Meanwhile, Philippine airport authorities said they are prepared to prevent the entry of swine flu in the country with the use of thermal scanning procedure for inbound passengers.

Symptoms of the swine flu virus include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and headaches.

Here are some of the steps to take to protect yourself and other people from getting the swine flu virus:

1. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and water.
3. Avoid close contact with sick people.
4. If you have flu like symptoms, see a doctor right away and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread this way.

Vicks VapoRub Misuse May Hurt Infants

Vicks VapoRub (also commonly called vapor rub, vaporizer, inhaler) — one of the most trusted over-the-counter remedies against cough and cold here in the Philippines may cause airway inflammation that can restrict breathing in infants under age two.

Dr. Bruce Rubin of Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina said the ingredients in Vicks can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway. And since infants and young children have airways that are much narrower than those of an adult, any increase in mucus or swelling can narrow them severely.

“The company [Procter & Gamble Co] is really clear it should never go under the nose or in the nose for anybody and it shouldn’t be used in children under 2,” said Rubin, whose study appears in the journal Chest.

While the researchers only tested the Vicks product, Rubin said similar products, including generic versions, could cause the same negative effects in infants and toddlers.

BFAD clears all local Sunflower biscuit variants

The Department of Health (DoH) on Wednesday lifted the ban on Sunflower Crackers Blueberry Cream Sandwich after the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) declared it melamine-free.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said that 16 variants of Sunflower crackers, including the blueberry creme sandwich, were negative from melamine.

The BFAD test results contradicted the Hong Kong Center for Food Safety’s (HKCFS) advisory that the blueberry creme is tainted with the deadly additive.

Meanwhile, major ingredient suppliers of Sunflower have guaranteed that the milk, buttermilk, flour and other dairy ingredients are all melamine free and sourced mainly from Australia and New Zealand, officials of Croley Foods, makers of Sunflower biscuits here in the Philippines said.

Sunflower Crackers Blueberry Cream Sandwich found positive for melamine in Hong Kong

The Department of Health (DoH) on Monday banned the sale and export of Sunflower Crackers Blueberry Creme Sandwich after it was tested positive for melamine contamination by the Hong Kong-based Centre for Food Safety (CFS).

The CFS website said Croley Foods Sunflower Crackers (Blueberry Cream Sandwich) was found to contain 3.2 parts per million (ppm) melamine.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said he has ordered the pullout of the melamine-tainted product from store shelves pending test results from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD). BFAD is set to test all Sunflower products manufactured by Croley Foods Manufacturing Corporation for possible traces of the industrial chemical.

Meanwhile, a letter from Croley Foods’ marketing manager Jeremiah Lim assured that the ingredients they use for their products are certified melamine-free.

“Croley is open and has nothing to hide. It has various certifications…issued by its raw material suppliers attesting to the fact that the suppliers are free from melamine,” Lim said in the letter.

BFAD tests 56 milk products for possible melamine content

The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) on Friday released the names of 56 milk and dairy products to be tested for the presence of kidney stone-causing chemical melamine.

BFAD said that it would still be best if consumers would stay away from these milk brands in the meantime, until the bureau finishes its tests by October.

First Breast Milk bank opens in Makati

Some 200 women donated breast milk to the country’s first community milk bank at the Guadalupe Nueva barangay hall, Makati City Thursday to help babies who could not be breastfed by their mothers.

The community milk bank is a project of Senator Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, in coordination with the Makati City health department and Makati Representative Abigail Binay. “The idea is to tell moms who are breastfeeding to take it a step forward, to help other moms who cannot immediately breastfeed,” said Cayetano.
