“Filippina” referred as “cleaning woman” in Italy

An article in the October 1 issue of Time magazine titled “What Berlusconi’s Obama ‘Jokes’ Say About Italy” says that Italians often generically refer to a cleaning woman as a “Filippina.”

“In many ways, mainstream Italian society is several generations behind the rest of the West when it comes to race.” the article said. Domestic work is not exclusive to Filipinos in Italy. Ukrainian and Moldavian migrants also make up the said industry. Their tasks include house cleaning, baby sitting and caring for Italy’s sick and elderly. Filipinos have also boosted the dwindling population of Catholic church-goers in Rome.

Angel Locsin, ABS-CBN’s “Kahit Isang Saglit,” and GMA-7’s “Magdusa Ka” are among the official nominees in the 37th International Emmy Awards (2009), the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS) announced Monday.

Angel Locsin was nominated under the Best Performace by an Actress category for her performance in the teleserye Lobo.

Meanwhile, two Filipino made series made it under the Telenovela category. ABS-CBN’s “Kahit Isang Saglit,” which starred Jericho Rosales and Carmen Soo and GMA-7’s “Magdusa Ka,” which starred Katrina Halili and Dennis Trillo.

The winners will be announced on November 23, 2009 at the 37th International Emmy Awards ceremony Hilton New York Hotel.

Miss Universe 2009 Winner is Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela

Venezuela’s Stefania Fernandez was crowned Miss Universe 2009 in the recently concluded pageant in the Bahamas, making history as it is Venezuela’s second consecutive win. Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza was also from Venezuela.

Filipino-American Thia Megia on America’s Got Talent 2009

14-year-old Filipino-American Thia Megia is now one of the frontrunners of the reality TV show “America’s Got Talent” Season 4 (2009).

During the show’s Chicago audition, Thia got 3 “yes” from judges David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osborne and Piers Morgan with her rendition of the song “I Am Changing” originally sung by Jennifer Holliday.

She along with other hopefuls who passed the auditions will be sent to a bootcamp in Las Vegas where they can perfect their craft. The 8th grade student from California has reportedly been singing since she was 4.

Filipina Kimverlie Molina is WCOPA 2009 winner

18-year-old Filipina Kimverlie Molina who represented Saudi Arabia bagged the gold in the senior vocals category in the recently concluded World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2009.

She bested five other contestants from Russia, Malaysia, Sweden and two other Filipinos in the finals. Kim is the eldest daughter of Dr. Ronaldo Molina and Myrna Soriano from Al Khobar, eastern Saudi Arabia.

King of Pop Michael Jackson has died at age 50 after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to media reports.

He was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Jackson had been busy rehearsing for a high-stakes comeback tour, set to start within weeks in England, with dozens of dates scheduled and tickets selling out quickly.

His death has stunned fans young and old, and messages of grief and appreciation have poured in from his family, close friends in Hollywood, and fans around the globe.
