PNoy partied with Valerie Concepcion at the height of Sendong relief efforts?

Host-actress Valerie Concepcion revealed in a tweet that she hosted the PSG (Presidential Security Group) party Sunday night and PNoy was apparently enjoying himself at the height of typhoon Sendong’s relief efforts.

“Done w/ work.. Tnx for having me.. :) It was nice to see Pres. P-Noy laughing at my jokes & enjoying my performance..” she tweeted. This didn’t sit well with some Filipino Twitter and Facebook users as they thought it was “insensitive” for them to party while Mindanao is mourning the hundreds of people killed by Sendong. Meanwhile, Communications Undersecretary Manuel “Manolo” Quezon III confirmed that there was indeed a party for the PSG and the President dropped by for 30 minutes to be with those who saved his life.

SC Chief Justice Renato Corona impeachment case / complaint

More than 170 members of the House of Representatives (Congressmen) have signed the impeachment complaint or case against Chief Justice Renato Corona on Monday.

There are 8 grounds cited for the said case, which include his midnight appointment by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Chief Justice; his track record marked by partiality and subservience in cases involving the Arroyo administration; failure to disclose to the public his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth; etc.

Congress would reportedly transmit the case to the Senate either Monday or Tuesday. After an impeachment trial in the Senate, a two-thirds vote or 16 senators are needed in order to remove Corona from office.

Bohol Congressman Relampagos files House Bill 5422 – EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue

Bohol Representative or Congressman Rene Relampagos has filed a bill proposing the renaming of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue.

Part of the bill states, “An Act Renaming Epifanio de los Santos Avenue to Cory Aquino Avenue in Honor of Former President Corazon C. Aquino, First Woman President of the Republic of the Philippines, an Icon of Democracy an a Leading Figure in the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution that Restored Democracy in the Philippines, repealing for the purpose Republic Act No. 2140 and for other purposes.” Republic Act 2140 is the law that renamed Highway 54 to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in 1959.

Images or photos of the mugshots of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (CGMA) have been leaked and was even published on the front page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

This in spite of the ruling of Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 112 under Judge Jesus B. Mupas against its release. Arroyo may file a case against those who will be caught publishing them the court added. The mugshots showed three angles of CGMA wearing a neck brace while lying on a hospital bed with the words “Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Crim Case # R-PSY-11-04432-CR” printed at the bottom. The police have confirmed the authenticity of the leaked images and photos.

Batangas Hollywood sign on Taal Volcano proposed

The provincial council of Batangas has reportedly approved a resolution to erect a Hollywood-inspired signage with the word “Batangas” across Taal Volcano.

The font would be just like the iconic Hollywood signage in Los Angeles, California. The idea was conceived by Batangas governor Vilma Santos-Recto. Aside from the Batangas sign, the tourism office of the province also suggested that floating restaurants or fish pens can be set up on Taal Lake in a layout that would form the Batangueño expression “Ala Eh.” The news was met with disbelief and ridicule from Filipinos in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Anti-Angry Birds Bill is not true – Philippines

There are rumors that Congressman Winston “Winnie” Castelo of Quezon City filed House Bill 5379 or the Anti-Angry Birds Bill.

According to blog posts, Castelo got the idea for the alleged bill when he went shopping at a mall and saw a lot of angry birds merchandise. You might recall that it was Castelo who filed the anti-planking act or bill of 2011, which was criticized for being pointless. But this time around, this anti-angry birds bill is a hoax. If this were true then the major news websites here in the Philippines would have picked it up. A lot of people actually fell for it and made it a trending topic on Twitter.

Photoshopped photo/image of DPWH officials on Facebook draws flak

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) drew the ire of Filipino netizens after they posted a “photoshopped” photo/image/picture on their official Facebook Page.

The said photo shows DPWH Undersecretary Romeo Momo, Metro Manila Regional Director Reynaldo Tagudando, and South Manila District Engineer Mikunug Macud talking and assessing typhoon Pedring’s aftermath on the seawall in Baywalk along Roxas Boulevard. Civil engineer Pierre Albert San Diego was the one who first took notice and posted his analysis on his blog. “If they [DPWH] can fabricate simple things like this, just imagine what these guys can do to progress billings and acceptance of projects.” part of his blog post said. The picture has been taken down as of this posting with DPWH posting a public apology on their FB page.

SM releases official statement on the shooting incident in SM Pampanga

Here is the official statement of the management of SM regarding the shooting incident in SM City Pampanga on Tuesday:

The SM management deplores the unfortunate incident that happened today at SM City Pampanga and is fully cooperating with the authorities in this regard.

Just before noon, a 13 year old boy shot his alleged 17 year old lover and then himself in front of a restaurant chain at SM City Pampanga. A suicide note was found in the bag of the 13 year old revealed that the incident was a crime of passion and of a personal nature. Both are in the hospital.

According to Colonel Tinio, who is heading the investigation, while security at SM City Pampanga has been constantly vigilant, the small 22 caliber gun used was very difficult to detect as this was so small in size.

SM has also exerted all efforts to help the two victims and both their families are now in the hospital.

We apologize for whatever inconvenience or anxiety we may have caused our customers and wish to let them know that the situation in the mall is back to normal.

Anti-Planking Act of 2011 – Philippines

Here’s a copy of the articles of the proposed Anti-Planking Act of 2011 filed by Congressman Winston “Winnie” Castelo of Quezon City:

SECTION 1. This Act shall be known as the “Anti-Planking Act of 2011”.

SEC. 2. A universal Code of Student Conduct is hereby prescribed where planking as a form of redress of grievance be strictly prohibited and appropriate sanctions be applied for violations thereof.

SEC. 3. Under this Act, planking is when a student or group of students lies face down in unusual locations especially in streets or other public places, keeping the hands along the body and the feet outstretched and especially where such act is meant as a form of redress of grievance against government.

SEC. 4 Every bonafide student from any school, college or university shall conduct himself with high degree of discipline and propriety.

SEC. 5. The Department of Education in the case of elementary and high school students and the Commission on Higher Education in the case of college students shall draft a universal Code of Student Conduct to carry out the provisions of this Act.

Further, DepEd and CHED, respectively shall issue appropriate rules and regulations to effectively carry out intent and purpose of this Act.

SEC. 6. This Act shall take effect ninety (90) days after its publication in the Official Gazette and in at least three (3) newspapers of general circulation.

UP, Ateneo, La Salle, and UST drop in world rankings

The rankings of the Philippines’ known prime universities — UP, Ateneo, La Salle, and UST slid farther than their positions last year in the latest QS World University Rankings released Monday.

The University of the Philippines now ranks 332 from the 314th place last year, Ateneo de Manila University now ranks 360 from 307th place last year, The De La Salle University is now in the 551-600 bracket from the 451-500 bracket last year, and the University of Santo Tomas is now within 601+ bracket from the 551-600 bracket last year. The drop in rankings is attributed to the budget cuts in education made by the Aquino government.
