Honda recalls Accord, Civics in the US for Air Bag Defect

Honda Motor Co said it is recalling 440,000 vehicles in the United States including some of its best-selling Accord and Civic models due to a defect in the airbag that killed one person and injured six others.

The recall covers certain 2001 and 2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and some 2002 and 2003 model Acura TL sedans. The company will contact customers to arrange a time to replace the driver’s steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator without charge.

Goodyear tires Philippines closes plant in Las Pinas

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is set to close its tire plant in Las Piñas City, Philippines on Sept. 30, 2009 amid weaker global demand.

The closing of the plant would result in the laying off of 500 of its 600 Filipino workers. They will, however, maintain their marketing, sales, distribution and administrative offices here.

Goodyear Philippines would reportedly source its supply from plants in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

New Shell Ferrari Toy Cars – Philippines

MTV, Shell and Ferrari just launched the new Ferrari Toy Cars with real engine sounds last April 6 at the SM Mall of Asia’s Main Mall Atrium.

The latest batch of the New Ferrari Model Cars features 7 new 1:38 scale model Gran Turismo Ferraris. Shell reportedly commissioned the Ferrari FXX, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Ferrari F430 Challenge, Ferrari 250 GTO, Ferrari F40, Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, and the Ferrari 575 GTC.

To avail of the new Ferrari toy cars, just gas up at any participating Shell station with a minimum purchase of 500 pesos. The toy cars cost 80 pesos each when you load up with Shell V-Power and 120 pesos each for other purchases. Promo runs from April 6 up to May 17.

Chinese automaker, Lifan Cars enters the Philippine market with the introduction of their first car, the LF520.

The LF520 will just be the first among three cars it plans to sell here in the Philippines this year. It is a subcompact sedan and is complemented by a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) 16-valve head engine with electronic throttle control, a 5-speed manual transmission, steered by a rack-and-pinion, hydraulic assisted steering system, suspension comes by the way of a McPherson strut with stabilizers in front and a torsion beam in the rear, safety features include ABS, driver and passenger airbags and side-beam crash protectors.

Lifan Cars is a unit of China-based conglomerate Lifan Group with operations in the financial/banking sector, real estate, football industry and research and development.

They plan to introduce more cars after the LF520, including an MPV, electric car and mini-car in the future.

The Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) on Tuesday announced that it is extending its free motorcycle riding safety seminar to the public throughout the month of October.

GSIS set to monopolize car insurance (CTPL)

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is set to monopolize the 3.5-billion peso motor vehicle insurance business after a Makati court has dismissed a petition by local insurers to stop a Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) plan to integrate compulsory third party liability (CTPL) insurance policies into the vehicle registration process.

Under the plan, the GSIS, through publicly held National Reinsurance Corp. of the Philippines, would provide insurance coverage for all vehicle owners. “Registrants will only have to go to the LTO instead of dealing with 120 or more insurance companies. It will also eliminate fixers,” said GSIS president Winston Garcia. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is expected to implement the system in two weeks. Meanwhile, 60,000 insurance agents are expected to lose their jobs once this is implemented.
