Manny Pacquiao will be up against Miguel Cotto in a 12-round boxing fight dubbed as “Firepower” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 14 (November 15 in the Philippines).

The fight is for the WBO welterweight title (147 pounds) and the catch weight for both fighters is at 145 pounds. The winner will also received a customized diamond belt. It will be aired on Solar Sports and GMA-7 via delayed telecast, which means lots of TV commercials in between rounds. The pop girl group “La Diva,” which is composed of Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos, and Maricris Garcia will sing the Philippine national anthem (Lupang Hinirang) in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s fight against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico on November 14, 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The group auditioned in the early part of this year as well as other artists from ABS-CBN and GMA 7 and Pacquiao was particularly impressed by “La Diva” when he saw them perform. The Filipino boxing superstar also assured that the said group will sing the national anthem according to what the law prescribes to avoid another controversy.

PBA suspends Wynne Arboleda for hitting Smart-Gilas fan

Burger King Whoppers point guard Wynne Arboleda has been suspended by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) without pay for the rest of the 2009-10 season for attacking a fan in last Friday’s game where BK was up against Smart-Gilas Pilipinas.

Arboleda admitted that he lost his temper after being heckled by Smart-Gilas fan Alain Katigbak who was seated at the special ringside section across the Whoppers’ bench. He later issued a public apology to Katigbak. Katigbak, for his part, said that he is ready to file a case of physical injuries against the Arboleda.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles took Game 1, 78-71 of their UAAP Season 72 best-of-three finals Thursday against the University of the East Red Warriors and move a win away from winning back-to-back titles.

It was Ateneo’s 12th straight win dating back to the elimination round. Ateneo’s Rabeh Al-Hussaini scored 28 points and 14 rebounds while UE’s Paul Lee led the Warriors with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Game 2 will take place on Sunday, October 4.

UAAP Cheerdance 2009 Results – FEU Pep Squad wins

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Pep Squad bagged the 2009 UAAP Samsung Cheerdance Competition on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ateneo de Manila University’s Blue Babble Battalion came in second while defending back-to-back champion the University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad settled for third. The scores of the squads were 86.1%, 83.4%, and 83.1%, respectively. Meanwhile, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, who has eight championships ended up outside the top three.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad will try to defend their title in the upcoming 2009 UAAP CheerDance Competition on September 13, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
