From the brains behind the hit Big Brother and Deal or No Deal franchises, Endemol is now giving pop star hopefuls a chance to be a step closer to their dream. Originally known as Star Academy, its emerging popularity brought about its franchises in various part of the world. Africa refers to it as Project Fame while in the US it’s touted as The One: Making a Music Star. Other countries who caught the Star Academy fever are the UK, Turkey, Spain, Russia, Romania, Portugal, the Netherlands, Middle East, Mexico, Italy, India, Greece, Germany, France, Chile, Canada, Bulgaria, Brazil, Belgium, and Argentina.
In spite of the various names that its been called in each country, the mechanics are basically the same, wherein the “academy” is being managed by a principal and teachers are there to teach the students various artistic disciplines. Day and night the students will be monitored by hidden cameras and there would be weekly live performances of the students where they will showcase the things they have learned and practiced in the past week. During the concert, a panel of jurors will choose the students who will be nominated for the week. The public then gets to vote for the student they want to remain at the academy.
Star Academy is actually the second biggest reality show franchise in the world – the top being Big Brother.

A comment from chickadora’s blog, a certain azul said
I don’t watch Pinoy teleseryes but I happened to catch the first 3 episodes of Captain Barbell. And it’s forgivable that the basic premise is similar to that of Superman I guess because Captain Barbell is our own version of Superman. HOWEVER, being someone who has seen the original Superman movie and followed the first season of Smallville, what I saw was not merely a homage to Superman, but a rip-off. Come on. Open your eyes. Adopted parents driving a red pick-up truck through the desert when a meteor capsule carrying a baby from another time. THey didn’t even TRY to look original by at least changing the kind of car Teng’s adopted parents were riding in. And discovering his super strength when he lifts the Lolo’s tractor. Whoa! De Ja Vu? And these are just physical rip-offs. I can write a whole essay on the unoriginal story. Saying to just turn a blind eye on its flaws is being in denial and a hindrance to improving the series. We must look within its flaws and change it. it may be rating high now, but when people realize that they’re watching a second-rate version of Smallville, Captain Barbell may not be as strong anymore in a month or so. I wonder if Warner Brothers can sue GMA for infringement?

Miguel blogs about links to Free TV online
The previous post on watching TV for free received a lot of traffic, however there are some other services available that also work very well. I started looking and found a ton of free TV web sites. I’ve posted the best ones here for you to try for yourself’s. My favorite is the last one on the list, Martial Arts TV. Don’t forget to watch Gracie vs Hughes tonight on Pay Per View! Should be a historic match from the Staples Center!
