Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher derogatory reference to Philippine med schools

A group of Filipino-Americans are demanding an apology from American television network ABC and the series Desperate Housewives for including a derogatory reference to Philippine medical schools in the script of their season premiere show Sept. 30.

In the said show, Susan (played by Teri Hatcher) who is one of the main characters, was consulting a gynecologist who said she might be hitting menopause. She replied “Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”

Okay lang dmi naman tlagang walang kwentang med skul sa pinas

  2. Lunedi Says:

Charles – I still think it’s a deregatory remark. So what kung meron ngang mga med schools of ill-repute a Pinas? The thing is the statement is implying that all med schools in the Philippines aren’t legal! C’mon you’re willing to put aside the quality education schools like UST and UP give in this field? What about the countless universities around the country that produce intelligent and talented doctors?

Tama lang we get an apology.

  3. noypi Says:

    oo nga.

pero inde naman si Teri Hatcher ang me kasalan nito kundi yung writer/director/producer nito..

artista lang sya. tiga basa at arte.

Need talaga ng APOLOGY from the producer. Insult ito sa skills ng mga pinoy.

  4. mia rila Says:

Filipinos need to get over it. You are in our country. Deal with it. If you don’t like it go back home.

  5. api Says:

    sobra naman ito, bkt ganun

hindi tama un. there are lots of nurses here in the Philippines that are working
there ass of just to go to abroad. And to here this script from a well known series
in the USA not only in the USA but also half the world (maybe) they are like destroying
the credibility of a Filipino nurses. we deserve an apology indeed!

  6. Aaron Says:

Just imagine if the Philippines doctors and nurses did a strike, then they’d know how valuable we are.

  7. yana Says:

yeah..teri shouldn’t be the first one to be blamed but the writer, but you see…she had a choice! to think she’s part filipino..geezz…shame on her and the whole DH team!!

  8. sara Says:

hehehe we dont get affected by that coz its not true :) geez they have to do that to be popular to us, theyre pathetic.

  9. dennis gutierrez Says:

well, “Americans are the source of terrorism in the world!”

  10. shinjyou Says:

what if instead of the word “Philippines” its “america” would the whorish americans feel the same bull-crap about the pride as a country. well it definitely deserves an apology.

  11. Marie Reyes O'Connor Says:

True the statement was unfair and uncalled for, so let’s prove everyone wrong, first let us get out of that list as one of the most corrupt country, support those in the government and encourage public officials to do the right thing. Let us all focus on the bigger picture, make basic necessities like water be available in every home, create jobs, alleviate poverty give the people a reason to be good honest citizens, show us, show the country that the government can be trusted to turn this country around.

  12. juan Says:

hey mia rila, are you an American Indian? If not shut the f*@k up! What are you going to do, make the African Americans go back to Africa too if they complain about racism in ‘your’ country? Shut up redneck!

  13. teri hatcher hater Says:

what teri hatcher did just made me think more about hollywood actors and actresses as illiterates. Most of them did’nt have any diploma or any certification about graduating in a school. “SO WHY Did SHE HAD TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING SHE MAY NOT HAVE(the diploma thing) hehehehehehe”?

  14. Carlos Almonte Says:

i saw this on youtube and i cant bear the thought that when she delivered the line…those american televiewers will put on concluding that phil is full of fake docs. my mom in the US have watched it and called the networks’ agent to proposed an interactive and written apology. oh mothers.

  15. liza Says:

teri hatcher was wrong. she had a choice whether to follow the script or not. the writers were also wrong. what they did was very rude. they should all apologize for what they’ve done.

  16. joy Says:

then go home too.. those americans here in the philippines.. an apology counts.. sept 11 will still haunt you down if you’re still discriminating people..

  17. joy Says:

mia rila.. then go home too.. those americans here in the philippines.. an apology counts.. sept 11 will still haunt you down if you’re still discriminating people..

  18. kaycee Says:

they should not hire doctors or nurses or caregivers from here if thats the case, grabe cla.

  19. Gloria Says:

we can’t blame americans for judging the filipino nurses, doctors, etc…. but it’s inappropriate act to judged our co – filipinos in an internatiional television. dapat lang di tayo paaapi.

  20. gigi Says:

RESEARCH AND INTERVIEWS- is all i can say about the producers, writers, actors, and actresses of this show!! NOT BECAUSE ONE MED SCHOOL is not good doesn’t mean all the med schools in the philippines are the same!! it’s the same thing here in america, you think all the med school here are “GOOD?” don’t make me laugh!! no wonder there’s a lot of medical malpractice lawsuits here!!! FOR TERI HATCHER – what happened to actor’s right?? you have the right to refuse to say these lines, if you will just stop and THINK!! I don’t watch desperate housewives, coz I’M NOT THAT DESPERATE!!

  21. cookie Says:

The remark was too discriminating. Even if we don’t have schools or universities like the ones they have in the US, the Philippines has produced a lot of talented professionals, in almost all fields!!!! We have produced world class talents! As for the medical field, I hope they would conduct a research on who is the brainchild of the treadmill test for those with heart problems that is used all over the world….a Filipino….and was copied by an…..do your homework please…..

  22. terrorist Says:

mia rila, you’re an as$hole! and i’m not even from the philippines.

  23. Allan of California Says:

The producers and writer of the show should apologies and not Teri Hatcher…i just want to correct that person who said she (Teri Hatcher) is part filipino. She does not have any filipino blood in her.

  24. teri hatcher hater Says:

hey teri hatcher. do you have any “real diploma” to show?you’ve been begging it in the episode, but do you really have a real one??hahahaha

  25. jan Says:

actually, an actor/actress still has a say on hs/her script. in teri’s case, she said the line maybe because she believes in what it’s implyig. hell. you are pathetic teri.

  26. dan Says:

“Can I just check those diplomas because i just want to make sure that they are not from SOME med school in the Philippines”

eventhough there is the word “SOME”, I think it is not still right to mention our country or any other country…

  27. alex Says:

They have to think such racial slur is no joke. Such scorn reflect how ignorant they are. Philippines got the best doctors/surgeons, nurses, and medical practitioners in the world. They’re too lucky to have our service so its unethical for them to say such not knowing their own rubbish. Anyway the only problem is they’ve got the money but we’ve got the BBBBBRRRRRAAAAIIIIINNNN!!!!!! how pathetic!

  28. OJAY BENOIT Says:

I know we should blame the producers and staff of “Desperate Housewives MORE than Terri. She was just an actress, tama kayo “taga basa at arte”. BUT YES!! “S H E H A D A C H O I C E.” I am disowning her as part of our race. F*ck that!! Let’s see what happens if the Filipino Doctors and Filipino Medical techers really had a strike! And let’s see what happens if we stop sending our doctors and nurses and teachers to the US. They’d realize a BIG BIG LOSS. No wonder why terrorism is centered towards America. They should blame themselves why a lot of people hate them. They’re in-born racists. Some of them just eventually outgrows that attitude once they become well-educated about what WE can do. What Terri said is a big act of terrorism towards a worldwide Trust/Faith in the Filipino intellect.

  29. GloriaLabandera Says:

Hay paano naman kasi TALAGANG PANGIT NA ANG IMAGE NG MGA FILIPINOS kahit saang LUGAR noh?!? E ANO PA NGA BA DAHIL YAN SA MGA KABULASTUGAN AT MGA MASASAMANG GAWA-IN NG MGA FILIPINOS LALONG LALO NA ANG GOBYERNO NATIN. FROM CHEATING, CORRUPTION, PANLOLOKO SA KAPWA, PROSTITUTION, etc… etc…

  30. chocho Says:

    hatsing!!!!

  31. pinay Says:

even with a small budget for education.. we still have medical practitioners who can compete globally.. imagine if we had financial resources equal to that of the US.. let’s see which race outrivals the others.. [not to brag but i do believe filipinos have the capacity to do just so]..

a public apology would be appropriate.. one that’ll be seen and heard by as many as those who were able to watch that particular episode.. i don’t watch the series and yet i was able to hear about it.. a lot of filipinos are enraged about this.. specially graduates and undergraduates of philippine universities..

next it’ll be “some business school in the phils” or “some science college in the phils”..

  32. dylan Says:

i myself watch dsperate housewives and it is probably one of my favorite abc shows. but when i watched that episode where susan(teri) deliberately isulted philippine med schools it held me back. it breaks my heart to watch that scene and nakakaasar because i come from a medical school in the philippines. And to think there are so many renowned doctors and physicians around the world some are even teaching in harvard and other high quality schools in the world. Kung tutuusin binubuhay ng pilipinas ang health care system ng amerika. There are so many filipino medical professionals in america.

Even if it was a joke, still they named philippines and tualy jokes are half meant. this is a reminder that racial descrimination is always here to stay.so this is definitely a lesson to all filipinos that we should make a stand and not let them say whatever they want to say about the philippines.

  39. Nina Says:

I am a medical practitioner who have personally experienced some medical and clinical misjudgment of two first world doctors. But being ethical and understanding to my own colleagues, even Ms Teri Hatcher could not hear anything inappropriate coming from me. I will always respect my colleagues in this profession, I may not agree with them most of the time or may argue opinions with them, but we are bound morally and ethically with many medical guidelines that have set us apart from other professions. This same degree of respect and compassion is also what we share with our patients. For the writer(s) of that show, there probably is something lacking in your research about Philippine Medical schools, I do not think people in Recto will have the guts to fake a medical diploma. I fervently hope and pray that I am correct.
