Filipino Japeth Aguilar takes first step to the NBA
Former Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagle Japeth Aguilar is the first homegrown Filipino to play basketball in the US NCAA Division 1 in more than 50 years, and is one season away from drawing National Basketball Association (NBA) attention.
The 6′10″ small forward is a valuable sixth man for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, who finished third in the Sunbelt Conference last season. “If he gets to play in the NBA, it won’t just be for me, it will be for our country,” says Peter, Japeth’s father. “I just bank on what the Lord wants for him.” The next two NCAA seasons will show just how real that dream can be for a Filipino like Japeth Aguilar.
