Filipinos flock to Simbang Gabi 2007

The Christmas season in the Philippines began yesterday with the start of the Misa de Gallo or more popularly known as the Simbang Gabi. Thousands of Catholics across the Philippines attended the Dawn Mass, which usually starts at 4am. This custom lasts for nine days, starting on December 16 up to December 24 and is not just an annual tradition among Roman Catholics during the Christmas season but a show of faith.

Misa de Gallo is the Spanish phrase for Midnight Mass and were held before daybreak, hence the Filipino term ‘Simbang Gabi’ (Midnight Mass).
