Hong Kong columnist Chip Tsao calls Philippines a “nation of servants”
Columnist Chip Tsao described the Philippines as a “nation of servants” in an article he had written titled “The War At Home” in the March 27 edition of the widely-circulated HK Magazine.
In his article, Chip depicted the Philippines as a “nation of servants” not worthy of claiming the Spratlys from China, which employs hundreds of thousands of Filipino domestic helpers on very low wages.
In the same article, Chip threatened to terminate the employment of his Filipino domestic help, Louisa (whom he claims holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila), to avoid committing an act of treason “by sponsoring an enemy of the State by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows.”
Meanwhile, lawmakers have urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to lodge a formal protest before Hong Kong authorities and have joined calls in demanding a public apology from the Hong Kong publication and from Chip Tsao himself.

I first saw Chip Tsao on a news program on Channel News Asia and he spoke purely Chinese there. I suggest to SkyCable to remove Channel News Asia from its channel lineup as our way of protesting what he did to us Pinoys.

But kung ipamumukha nya sa atin na superior sila at minamaliit nila ang pagiging DH ng mga filipino as a general e hindi tama yun. dapat lang na mag-apologize sya. Sa tingin ko sa estado ng Pilipinas ngayon ito ay medyo may katotohanan. Aminin natin na marami na talagang mga professionals na nagiging “servants” sa ibang bansa at WALANG PROBLEMA dun. Hindi masama ang trabaho nila. Ika nga sa OFW, mga bagong bayani sila. Given na matagal nang mahirap ang Pilipinas. Matagal na tayong third world country kaya nagagawa ng mga kababayan natin ang magpaka-alila para kumita ng konti. Na imbis na isisi ay gumawa na lang sila ng paraan para sa problema.
Para sa mga nakupo sa gobyerno sana paigtingin pa mga proyekto para sa mas maganda pang trabaho. Suportahan ang agrikultura dahil noon ay dun tayo nangunguna. Sa gayon hindi natin problema ang pagkain.
Para naman sa bawat isa sa atin, sana maging matalino sa mga desisyon natin. Matuto sana tayong mangarap upang mas lalong umangat ang Pilipinas. Mangarap at kumilos. Totoong madaming ’servants’ na Pilipino sa ibang bansa. Sana itanong natin sa sarili natin kung kailan ang panahon na tayo naman ang kukuha ng ’servants’ sa ibang bansa. Isipin nyo na ang isang Pilipino ay may katulong na Amerikano, Intsik at iba pang lahi. Imposible nga ba yun? Ikaw, gusto mo bang habang buhay ang Pilipinas sa ganito estado?

Does Chip Tsao understand why Filipinos work in Hongkong? Does he possess the ethics and responsibilities in journalism. Does he understand the international law on sovereignty? His witty remarks tell him on his ignorance towards racial, political, social issues such as those mentioned. I pity his limited knowledge and intelligence to understand a wide perspective of service and international relations. No matter what, Filipinos work abroad not becauase of being servants but because of the quality of service that we render to them. Wherever you go, Filipinos excels whatever is our work because of the natural dedication and excellence that we show.

Our government should not be contented with their public apology as well as we should not waste our time waiting for Chip Tsao’s apology…
a) They should sue Chip Tsao (Cheap siopao…funny! ^_^) plus danyos perwisyo pambayad utang….
b) He must be placed in the boxing ring with Manny Pacquiao…goodluck!

there’s no problem in being a nation of servants. A servant is an obedient, god-fearing person. Even Jesus Christ called himself a servant of people, right? What pissed me off with his article is the fact that he implied that we should bow down to the chinese, since he quoted “As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.” He also stated that he reprimanded his filipina maid bcoz of this issue. This type of outright idiocy of some people is making the world a bitter place. Even if this is a satirical comment, he still has a public image to maintain and a responsibility to his readers to provide a positive sentiment to whatever issues he might feel strongly about, especially in the midst of financial,political and emotional turmoil that most of us are facing right now. Therefore, we are not in a sound mind to treat something like this as a satire.

“Nation of servants”, sad to say but we are. Our orientation at least majority of us is to
become employees. In a typical Filipino family. parents would instill the value of education so in the future we will be employed successfully depending on which profession we chose e.g., doctor lawyer, accountant, teacher, nurse, caregiver, etc. Our parents are proud to see that piece of paper called “diploma” in the walls of our living room. Unlike other orientals who would encourage and teach their children entrepreneural mentality and eventually becomes bosses as they become business and company owners. I graduated from a Chinese school and one of my friends and all of his siblings graduated their chosen course. There’s a doctor, a nurse, an engineer and an accountant but after graduation they chose to tend the family business. None of them pursue a career in their respective field of education. When I visited him last year in the province, I learned that he just came back from a month-long US and European tour with his wife, kids and a maid. He was proud to say that if he pursued his medical profession, he may be working in a hospital in the Philippines or abroad and possibly won’t be able to afford such a vacation. My point is that it is a choice. We may be sensitive about the issue however, that is just one person’s comment. Besides, if we are to think loudly, the word “servant” may mean employee, laborer or worker. What’s important is whichever we choose, we are fulfilled and we are doing it with dignity and utmost best of our ability.

Who gave Mr. Chip Tsao the right to STEPPED-DOWN on Filipinos? He should be taught a lesson – a lesson he will remember for the rest of his life. Filipinos are hospitable and kind-hearted by nature as compared to some Chinese who are cold-hearted like Mr. Chip Tsao.
Regardless of the type of work we Filipinos are engaged in – WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF IT because at least we are not stealing nor cheating others – like the business practice of SOME CHINESE using MELAMINE as milk extender, using boxes and papers as extenders in siopao. Come to think of it – Chinese businessmen in the Philippines are often times ENGAGED IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES.
I wish that a Filipino journalist can write “something interesting” about the chinese people. Interesting topics that they can perfectly fit in would be “Illegal drugs, illegal logging, human trafficking and of course their UNHYGENIC PRACTICES in HANDLING FOOD. Perhaps a journalist can also add up another annoying chinese “habit” or should i say “hobby” of SPITTING, BLOWING THEIR NOSES etc etc.
We may work overseas to earn a living but we can always face people HEAD UP with dignity and honor with what we are doing.

Chip Tsao claims to be an intellectual being worth of praise, but with how he wrote that article, he is nothing but an arrogant writer. He is just lucky to have been born to a country that is rich and prosperous, no humility at all, where is his manners. I bet his fellow countrymen are disgusted of this guy. …..Prominent columnist Chip Tsao has hit back at allegations of racism, saying readers angered by his observations on western men losing cachet with local women did not understand his sarcasm.
The article “Have Hong Kong girls stopped looking for Mr White?” in last week’s Sunday Morning Post, which cited Tsao’s column, has inspired a flood of passionate responses from readers.
Tsao had commented that western men who stayed in Hong Kong after the handover lived in dorms on Lamma Island or stone houses in Sai Kung that people used to “keep pigs in”.
He also said expatriate men “clad in T-shirts, thongs and flip-flops” bought beer from the 7-Eleven to get free gifts and were “muscular but did not last long” in bed.
A Sunday Morning Post reader from Vietnam, Karl John, said after reading Tsao’s comments: “I cannot find one statement of truth, just racist dogma and general sweeping statements.
“It is nothing more than a racially motivated observation that has probably been brought about by Chip Tsao’s inability to attract interest from Hong Kong ladies,” he said, reflecting a typical response of letter writers.

I really got pissed about what tsao said in his article. but anyway, spartly islands belong to the philippines. chinese people are normally corrupt and insecure. as for us filipinos, let’s not blame it all on the government. let’s be open minded. corruption is everywhere (esp in china haha) just go on with your lives don’t let anything affect you. as an idividual, we all should learn how to be responsible and independent. we can not solely on the government. the bad thing about us filipinos is we always blame it one the authorities. let’s just work hard for ourselves.

If he was half the man that he said he was in the expense of my Filipino public residing and working in Hong Kong now, he would have realized that the article was nothing but a bitter and desperate cry for attention. Cheap Chow comes from a cosmopolitan city where most of his kind spit in red carpeted restaurants which I personally witnessed when I was enjoying yum-cha and dimsums, one day when I was still working there during the ’90s. Just a couple of days working in Hong Kong while seated in the Tram, for 15 minutes, this Chinese was picking her nose, seemed that the line this Chinese was dialing was either busy or under repair. Ooooh…MTR, mornings are spoiled breathe of air where you smell Hong Kong Chinese dressed in Armani suits complemented by their morning breath and crumpled and pillow marked hair, with matching body odor. Chinese ladies there didn’t appeal much to me, because of their very poor hygienic practices. Filipina Chinese are by far, much better and good-smelling than them. Filipina domestic helpers there by FAR, are much more appealing compared to them. Cheap Chow is GAY, and he can’t reveal it in Hong Kong, his kind can’t be loud back there. So many muscular gay guys in Hong Kong, you’ll just know when they look at you expressively irritating. Back to the MTR during morning (rush hour), so many rude Chinese walk straight bumping you when you go in or go out of the train, which gave me opportunity to shoulder block ‘em all and didn’t give a f*c+k#n’ S*#T. I was there for 3 years, and I think their all cowards and just loud talkers, but nothing more. A lot of times, nobody even dared touch me. Cheap Chow Chip Tsao, what you want you shall get!!!

I felt so bad about how how low this Mr. Cheap Tsao thinks of Us Filipinos. Well it is true that a lot are going to Hongkong to work as Househelps but that’s a decent Job. I’ve been to Hongkong several times on a leisure trip, shop, spend some money there, went to Disneyland last may with my friends and family. I was surprised that most of the entertainment staff at disney are Filipinos but more than half of the tourists are Filipinos too. So now i recommend to my friends and to all Filipinos who can afford to go on vacation to Hongkong every year go somewhere else. Or better yet have your vacation here in the Philippines Go to Palawan or Bohol Instead of going to Hongkong. In a way you will also help our fellow Filipinos here. One more thing… everytime we get maligned we just demand for an apology,I think we should also look into ourselves. As a people. We should change inorder to gain the respect of the world. Start cleaning our backyards with corruption.

We Filipinos cannot deny the fact that we go abroad to earn money not for ourselves but for the rest of our family. We cannot deny the fact that college graduates are only qualified to be domestic helpers. It is an individual’s choice (but sometimes, most Filipinos don’t have a choice for that matter).

That Hong Kong columnist Chip Tsao definitely made it clear to the world that he is a racist and publicly proclaimed that he had VERBALLY ABUSED his Filipina maid.
So what can the government do about it? Accept his public apology, that is.
But who can help our Filipina maid who is still working for him? I guess, she still have to sacrifice the verbal beatings until she exhaust her contract (if it exists) or until she finds another employer.

I’m not taking side on this issue. But to think of it, AREN’T we?
Many Pinoys are working and even migrating to other countries to have better future. Most of us want to be a servant of other countries just for the sake of our future and that’s the fact. The first one’s who reacted are the Government? Seems that they’re somewhat defensive. What are those E-VATS for? Diba it’s for the development of the Philippines? But why is it there is still no development happens? They just started to make projects when it is already ELECTION. I just don’t get it why we people get blinded by the money, projects, VIP treatments and lots of it when in the first place they are just good in the start or should I say they are just good in before election. We all really knew it or were just acting blind? They really spend lots of money just to clean their name. In my own opinion, maybe there are no longer other options rather than these people who are cleaning their names out. That’s why we voted them in. Let’s face the FACT that our Government is such into GRAPH and CORRUPTION. They don’t even take any actions for those OFWs who are maltreated, raped, abused by their employers. Such sad reality! And they are lots of uncalled for scandals! Like ZTE scandals, Fertilizer fund scam, Police Officer who brought millions of euros in Moscow and they do even brought their wives and name it all. Imagine that? How much money do they get? And goes out for nothing? It’s really disappointing. We should have a leader who will really lead us out of this chaotic world. Tsk! Wake up people! WAKE UP! I don’t know but I really felt disappointed.

I am a Hong Kong Chinese. I wish to make it clear that I and probably most Hong Kong Chinese do not share any of the views expressed in Mr Chip Tsao’s article. Mr Tsao has been a snobbish writer in Hong Kong for ages. He spent some 15 years in the UK, and, like many colonized individuals in HK, prides himself on being semi-British. He looks down upon anything non-UK, including South East Asian countries and in particular the US.
I don’t have time to read through the anti-Chinese comments on this website, but I can understand why they came up. I just wish this matter should stop being racial just because a self-apprecating snob wrote a stupid satire.

What if Chip Chow said that in front of many Pinoy? He is lucky its just an article.I dont think Jacky Chan or Jet lee Can defend him. Regarding the comment from Hong Kong — at lease we Filipinos don’t put melamine in baby food or use lead paint on children’s toys — both subject to wold-wide recall because of safety concerns.
Filipinos working and living abroad make us citizens of the world broadening our perspectives rather than resorting to blatant racism.

Don’t they know that English is our second language? Do they think that they can get away with this, just by issuing this deplorable apology?
They claim that one aspect of a satire is that it can be read in different ways. Well, I’ll be darned if I read it “THE WRONG WAY!” No, HK-Magazine.com, that is definitely not a satirical piece, but an ESSAY penned by a racist Chinese; and boy does he make my blood boil too!
I urge our government officials to go ahead with what ever diplomatic protest they have in mind and serve the same to China. Let the “chips” fall where they may!

Pilipino ako, pero nakaka-asar din naman na halos lahat na ng pinoy eh nag punta sa ibang bansa para magtrabaho. Dahil sa malaki ang oppurtunities doon? dahil maraming pera sa ibang bansa?
Magagalit kayo sa mga nanlalait sa pinoy eh mga pinoy din naman ang dahilan kung bakit ganoon ung tingin ng ibang bansa sa atin.
Bakit hindi na lang tayo pumirme sa sarili nating bansa dito mag pursigeng magtrabaho at umunlad, hindi ba natin kaya yon? kung may tyaga may mapapala tayo sa sarili nating bansa. siguro sasabihin niyo corrupt ang gobyerno? eh sino bang bumoto sa kanila, tayo ding pinoy.
Masyado kasi tayong ma-pride pero tamad kaya hindi natin napapansin ang mali sa mga kababayan natin.

well, we all have our own share of being racists. however, despite the latent racism that we have, we manage to avoid it since we know that it’s not a good thing. however, there are just people who are innately, and even culturally, distasteful… and so, it shows in their expressions, be it spoken, written, or what have you. the fact that this article came out in a national magazine site, it just shows the level of (ill)’education’ these people have.
i have been to hk thrice and i just saw how most of them exist or survive… the wealthy and the middle class alike… all they were thinking was how to take advantage from something or from someone, how to profit, how they would get something…. it’s like a jungle out there… they survive by taking advantage… and yes, they take advantage of the ofw’s… giving them low wages…
here in japan, there are also a lot of ’servants’… and mind you, their jobs are tasks that not even a filipino worker in this country would ever do. some of them even fake their visas as student residents, changing their names… they even steal alien registration cards and steal identities just to be able to stay here.

Cheap Chow comes from a cosmopolitan city where most of his kind spit in red carpeted restaurants which I personally witnessed when I was enjoying yum-cha and dimsums, one day when I was still working there during the ’90s. History tells us that his kinds migrated to the Philippines centuries ago and became servants or amahs of our great grandparents. Just a couple of days working in Hong Kong while seated in the Tram, for 15 minutes, this Chinese was picking her nose, seemed that the line this Chinese was dialing was either busy or under repair. Ooooh…MTR, mornings are spoiled breathe of air where you smell Hong Kong Chinese dressed in Armani suits complemented by their morning breath and crumpled and pillow marked hair, with matching body odor. Chinese ladies there didn’t appeal much to me, because of their very poor hygienic practices. Filipina Chinese are by far, much better and good-smelling than them. Filipina domestic helpers there by FAR, are much more appealing compared to them. Cheap Chow is GAY, and he can’t reveal it in Hong Kong, his kind can’t be loud back there. So many muscular gay guys in Hong Kong, you’ll just know when they look at you expressively irritating. Back to the MTR during morning (rush hour), so many rude Chinese walk straight bumping you when you go in or go out of the train, which gave me opportunity to shoulder block ‘em all and didn’t give a f*c+k#n’ S*#T. I was there for 3 years, and I think they’re all cowards and just loud talkers, but nothing more. A lot of times, nobody even dared touch me. Cheap Chow Chip Tsao, what you want you shall get!!!

1.)STUPID GENERALIZATION..That guy said that the Philippines is a nation of servants just because he knew of Filipino workers in Hongkong and is employing a Filipina helper..I’m working in a Filipino-owned company employing several Chinese guys. Therefore, if Chip Tsao is right, I can also say that Filipinos are the masters of Chinese..
2.)ABSURD CONNECTION. Cheap (err Chip) said that the Philippines does not have a right to claim Spratly’s because some Filipinos are serving Chinese employers. What does one’s economic standing have anything to do with their basic right as a human being or as a soverign nation? It hurts, right? Don’t sit around, do something about it. If you forget the personality who wrote this and look at this in a factual way, is it not true? Do you know how the Filipinas are treated in Japan? They are considered cheap and wasteful women? Even the cats and dogs in Japan are honored better than the poor Filipina ladies. Who is to be blamed? Not Chinese or Japanese but the Philipinos themselves. Protect your women and children.
Take the example of the Sri Lankan President. He eradicated the export of housemaids of Sri Lanka to the middle east. These women were used as sex workers of a different nature. It was a severe blow to our cultural and religious heritage. So our President single-handedly stopped this non-sense. Some journalist from China, need not say this. He has to first look at what his country women are doing? I hope he will write something that will stir up the emotions of those Chinese ladies!

yeah… we should know what ‘malayang pamamahayag’ is… but ‘malayang pamamahayag’ must also be ‘responsible’ and ‘factual’… i’ve been to many parts of the world as a tourist… and i’m in japan right now as a student… not as a domestic helper… but i am only less than very small percentage of the filipino populace… but as what one of the commenters said, filipino domestic helpers also do not even make a large percentage in the filipino populace… this means that the assertion that the philippines is a ‘nation of servants’ is indeed statistically fallacious, not factual, and irresponsible… especially that when you read the article, it is really derogatory in nature… and it wasn’t even a satire… one doen’t need high level of education to realize that the article isn’t really a satire in any way.
also, i have nothing against the domestic helpers… they are people who, despite all the hardhips and undertakings, are willing to give more than themselves… just for their families and loved ones. i commend them because of their courage and guts. and i also don’t discount the fact that there really are filipinos who serve as bad examples. and so, i don’t think that all the blame should go to the government, we should all work on this together… as one people.

No offense. But you must be aware that Sri Lankla being a small island has so many problems. There is a war going on for over 30 years. But people only try to stay on and work hard. All those housemaids who were working abroad are returning. The Government is bearing the cost of bringing them back into the country. Do you see how important this is for us? So, Philipine, rich in resources and the kindness of the people is amazing. Many countries do not have what you have. So let others come to Philipines and pay lots of money to get your services. I have heard derogatory comments made by young Japanese men about the Philipino ladies. Let them have their money and that is not going to help them much. Let them make their children look after their old parents. Learn other ways to outsmart these so called rich countries! You can do it if we Sri Lankans can do it.

Nakakatawa nga namang isiping tayong mga Pilipino, galit na galit pag nalalait. Di sa pinapaboran ko si Chip Tsao kasi meron din syang mali sa mga ginawa niya; pero kung iaanalyze natin ng mabuti, MASAKIT MANG AMININ PERO TOTOO ANG MGA SINASABI NIYA! i live in japan now and i am a proud filipino. i am one of the many filipino scholars staying here in japan. what ‘genesis’ was saying about how filipinas are being treated in japan is again, not the complete and factual picture of how japanese people treat filipinos. maybe, genesis is in that environment… but as a resident here for four years now, having been able to live in shikoku for a year and here in tokyo area for 3 years, i must say that though there are japanese people who give low regards on filipinas, it would only comprise a very little percentage. a lot of japanese people are also happy and appreciative to have met a filipina because of the kind of character they have. but of course, each individual is different. we can always find a rotten tomato or two… but that doesn’t mean that everything is rotten.
in lieu of this, chinese on the other hand, are also given very low regards here in japan… much lower than how japanese would look at filipinos… however, again, as there are so many chinese people in japan, there are also those that contribute a lot to the japanese society.

I think Mr. Tsao didn’t know that the Filipino people provided a place for the Chinese individuals. He didn’t know about Ongpin in Manila.Spratly Island is a territorial issue between the Philippines and China. Being servants in another country y the Filipinos is not a big deal because we know for a fact that we are the most hardworking and trustworthy people in different places in the world.However before he commented on such matter he should have think first.
Almost 90% of the manpower of Hongkong relies on the Filipino workers and among that 90% includes the Filipino workers.
Mr. Tsao made his point to get the attention not only of the Filipino people but also the people around the world but sad to say that he did it in a wrong way.He hurt feelings of others just to come up with his wrong belief.
