The Sandiganbayan’s special division created to try Joseph “Erap” Estrada has 90 days to decide on his plunder case. The trial ended in June and the 90-day period ends on September 15.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have been placed on alert ahead of the Sandiganbayan’s verdict amid rumors of fresh destabilization plots and possible violence if deposed President Joseph Estrada was convicted in his plunder trial. Estrada described the deployment of troops and police forces as a clear case of “overkill and paranoia”. Should he be acquitted by the Sandiganbayan, Estrada said he would no longer contest President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s legitimacy.
