Award-winning director Marilou Diaz Abaya passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was 57 years old. She is survived by her husband Manolo Abaya, and sons David and Marc (an actor and frontman of the rock band Kwan).
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. It was gone again in 2010 and recurred in 2011. She was pronounced her final rites on Sunday afternoon. Her remains will lie in state at Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory in Quezon City starting today.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, major in Communication Arts, degree from Assumption College in 1976. She obtained her Master of Arts in Film and Television from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 1979, and pursued post-graduate studies at London International Film School.
Her most notable movie is the biopic “Jose Rizal†starring Cesar Montano, who is one of the most affected with the director’s death. “This is a very, very sad day for us and the movie industry. We lost not only a dear friend and family but also a rare gem in the industry.” Montano said.
