PETA Lettuce ladies promote vegetarianism in Quiapo
Three animal rights activists were mobbed by media and bystanders as they stood in the middle of Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila, Friday noon when they urged Filipinos to become vegetarians while wearing only lettuce leaves.

The three girls were models Ashley Fruno of Canada, Istara Bon Gundry of the US, and Katrina Lugartos of the Philippines and they are from the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The activists, protesting ahead of the global celebration of Earth Day next week, said in their statement that “meat production has a devastating impact on the environment”.

Its sad to see that the Filipinas in the background didn’t really tried to reach out their point while they let the White representative talk. Instead they posed for the Cameras. Shame on them.

yeah, yeah.
i was a bit dismayed by the girl with the short hair because i thought she didn’t really know what she did. i thought their act was unhealthy. that one they did. well, i’ve seen other peta members do the act, and somehow, the sencerity was there. sad to say, i didn’t feel it from them. sorry but, they were like “bomba stars” trying to sell tickets for their movie. sad.
but still, i believe in PETA. true enough, the cause was healthy; yet the way the deed was done - NOT.

Attention wh*res. Meat for life!
April 19th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
OMG yung girl sa left hanggang Pinoy Idol nagpapapansin! Grabe ha kung gusto niyo maging vegan, eh di maging vegan kayo! Pero huwag kayong mageeskandalo para lang itigil ang pagkain ng meat! It’s your choice to be vegan, it’s our choice to eat meat. Huwag attention wh*re!

@Zweihander: I don’t think you got their point. Their being “attention____” isn’t the point of it. The point is, production of meat is bad for the environment. So if you go vegan, the demand for meat lessens, which lessens the carbon emissions, which saves the ozone, which saves the planet. So yes, it is our choice to eat meat, but in doing so, feeds the demands that result in more carbon emissions. That’s the point. They’re not trying to get people to be vegan for mere attention.
I don’t like the way they did it, though. Their method garnered false impressions on Filipinos.
Anyway, isn’t Veganism more expensive than eating meat in this country? With all the food shortage and all, can the Philippines afford to go Vegan?

Hahaha. I doubt that.

Deforestation! I have nothing against people na vegans for their health, pero vegans na tingin nila eh they are saving the world tapos nage-eskandalo pa sa public para lang manghikayat maging vegan should all rot in hell. Mga ksp.

>> Hey, they are not attention whores, you know. It’s just a light hearted way to bring attention to a very serious issue which is animal farms have tremendous negative effects on the environment. It’s such a waste of resources. I think you should read more in order for you to understand them.

Vegan chick, maybe it is you who should read more. Start with my last 2 comments.

@ Zweihander
Growing all the crops to feed farmed animals requires massive amounts of water and land—in fact, nearly half of the water and 80 percent of the agricultural land in the Philippines are used to raise animals for food. Meat-eaters are responsible for the production of 100 percent of this waste—about 86,000 pounds per second!10 Give up animal products, and you’ll be responsible for none of it. Many leading environmental organizations, including the National Audubon Society, the WorldWatch Institute, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it’s the overuse of resources, unchecked water or air pollution, or soil erosion, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth. The most important step you can take to save the planet is to go vegetarian. Need I say more?

Plus there’s nothing offensive with what they did. That’s very hypocritical of you to say that.
>> And oh, can you comment on this in perfect English, please. There’s some glitches with your grammar. Poor you. I guess there’s just too much dead animals in your stomach right now.

I think it’s very surprising that most major environmental organisations are leaving the option of going vegetarian off their lists of top ways to curtail global warming. Of course there are many powerful businesses which would wish to resist this idea but it is becoming clearer that a simple change in peoples’ lifestyles could make a major difference to our environment. What is interesting is that nowadays it is so easy to become vegetarian and so many people are reducing meat in their diet. That is a simple but extremely effective step that many people could take to help the environment and improve their own health at the same time.
