Philippines lands 4th in remittances (OFW) in 2008
The Philippines placed 4th in Worldbank’s world’s top recipients of remittances list, thanks to the $16.43 billion that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) sent home in 2008.
Rounding up the top 10 are: India ($45 billion), China ($34 billion), Mexico ($26 billion), landing in fifth place is Poland with $11 billion, Nigeria ($10 billion), Egypt ($9.5 billion), Romania ($9 billion), Bangladesh ($9 million), and Pakistan ($7 billion).
The pace of remittance growth is an indicator of consumer spending, the fate of the country’s currency, and other hints of upcoming economic data.

is that something to celebrate?

I don’t think so. We should be the one who serve by other nation, not to be a servant of other nation.

thats y standard salary rate dyan sa pilipinas was intentionally very low compared to malaysia brunai and singapore para mapilitan ang mga pilipino mag abroad kasi malaki ang return sa government through remittances kaysa mga regular income tax lang locally… in fairness sa ASEAN isa ang pilipinas sa mayaman na bansa pero yun government natin ginawa tayong pulubi sa mata ng mundo just to gain more form its people’s sacrifice….
April 11th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

US$, na pinapasok nila sa bansa dahil it will help our economy a lot.
April 11th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
excuse me! hindi ako servant sa ibang bansa. ako ang boss dito sa pinagtatrabahuhan ko. marami akong servants from other nations. kaya wala akong dapat ikahiya kung nagtatrabaho man ako dito sa ibang bansa. ikaw ang nakakahiya! alipin ka sa sariling bansa. ewwww…

may nakukuha bang income tax ang pilipinas sa mga OFW? ang alam ko kasi, non-resident citezens such as OFWs are only tax from sources within the Philippines…

this is just a matter of fact report like the ones you look up in the yearly almanac.
no need to get hysterical or emotional.
in this age of globalisation, capital (both financial and human) go to wherever they
are needed and wherever the most profit is reasonably assured.
terms like “maging alila, maging alipin, nagpapaalila” etc are getting trite and boring.
you go where the jobs are. you invest where you will earn.
