What is the significance of this ratings data? Some say this is a tool for advertisers to budget their spendings how come GMA is always leading in Metro Manila, which is supposedly the most important for advertisers, yet 14 of the top 15 most effective Celebrity Endorsesers are from ABS-CBN? Also, how are these rating broken down? In the US, they base in demographics. In Metro Manila, who comprises the sample sets? Metro Manila is comprised of over 70% $2 a day earner household, why would advertiseres target that?

well, the fact of this matter is, this AGB Nielsen TV Ratings sh!t is totally bogus. i mean obviously they are on the same side of the bed with GMA. it’s actually quite pathetic when you survey a national issue to the capital only. this proves that these people are a cheapskate… I disgust GMA.

don’t be affected guys, ang pinag-uusapan nga eh yung sa metro manila wala namang sinabi na kasama na buong mundo. Mas hot tempered pa kayo kaysa sa ABS na natatalo sa ratings. And advertisers targets the viewers ng metro manila kasi kadalasan kung ano trend ng manila ginagaya sa probinsya ^_^

mga ratings din iyon based in MegaManila Households…at may separate din from Metro Cebu and Metro Davao.

Ewan ko nga dyan sa mga kapamilya nuong channel 2 ang namamayagpag sa AGB ratings before yun din ang ginagamit nila at everyday din silang nagpopost. Pero nung Mulawin, Full House, Starway to Heaven and Extra Challege daysna nag-iba na ang hangging dun na nagsimulang nag #1 ang GMA at tuloy tuloy na. Tanggapin na lang natin na number 1 ang GMA kasi nga nung number 1 ang ABS di naman nagquestion ang mga taga GMA dahil nga alam nilang totoo yun. Ngayon naman na ang GMA na ang number one daming nagpopost na di totoo at sasabihin pa ang TFC na di naman pinapansin ng mga advertisers kahit na 1000% pa ang ratings. Improve na lang ang mga shows nila para makahabol sila di ba ganun naman ang ginawa ng GMA nung kulelat pa sila.

my points are these… GMA keeps on blubbering that it is leading in the competition in every timeslot but it is not actually stating the parameter that the survey is done in the what they call as the “megamanila” area. That channel is silent as to informing the public the limitation of the survey and failed to even define what is exactly MegaManila and what does it represent? Does it speak about the totality of the viewership that the pinoy crowd all over the world is hooked over the 2 warring networks? I mean its blinding to me as an ordinary TV viewer to see that channel is so proud of the victory it got from the ratings wihtout informing me the full story behind the results of ratings race it presented in between its commercial spots like as ive mentioned the failure to state the parameter that the survey is done in the MegaManila area only. I just read it in newspapers that the ratings are actually a survey conducted in that area alone. My point here is simply for GMA to always indicate the MEGAMANILA area and to have a disclaimer that it does not necessarily hold true in the national survey so that everything is really clear. We, as intellectually average viewers, will easily understand that ah megamanila pala ang survey na ito! Di ba kapuso?

I agree to what one contibutor here. He says something about digital TV. Now here’s my take on it, granting that there are 2 networks competing from one another and both are competing over a clearer TV reception, Network ABS is not so clear while Network GMA is very clear, the viewers have no choice but to opt to watch the network with better reception because of many benefits they get to their advantage. As to the nasira ang reception ng ABS dahil nag upgrade ang GMA, that maybe has truth in it but its not for me to confirm coz im not an expert to that. My point is, surveys can’t also be reliable as to whether what shows the viewers watch every night register in their hearts and minds because of the “no option” factor.

For AGB Nielsen, the one conducting the perennial TV survey, must as well come up with a survey in the national level – region to region – and indicate which TV shows lead in this timeslot, in this region, in this household class (whether Classes A, B, C & D) or what one contributor here as well said the DEMOGRAPHICS of the survey. And AGB itself should be the one advertising the survey results in both networks so that it will appear to be more decent and reliable.

For the viewers like me, we have our hearts and brains of which station to take side with. Let’s just be partial as to which channel we should defend in times of issue discussions concerning TV Ratings. We must not deny the fact that we are not glued 24/7 over one TV channel, we switch a lot of times if i may guess it. Kaya mga kapamilya-kapuso or kapuso-kapamilya, stick to shows u think best describe your viewing preference. Instead of taking side per network, do it on a per show basis.

Ano na naman yang ratings na yan. Bakit ba hindi matanggap ng mga taga kapamilya na talagang talo kayo. Noon ang kapamilya ang namamayagpag ni hindi nga nagquestion ang mga taga GMA dyan sa AGB Nielsen mega manila ratings. Ngayon na ang GMA ang number one di nyo matanggap. Double standard naman ang pag-iisip nyo. Basta legal yan. Isisingit pa yung TFC, buong mundo, Milan daw. naku kahit pa 1million ang ratings dyan wala pa ring pakiaalam dito sa Phils. kaya itingil nyo na yan.

Magsikap na lang ang ABS na pagandahin ang show nila like what GMA did nung sila pa ang number 2. Umisip sila nang maaring makapag-angat sa kanila.

TO the TFC fans its illogical or no comparison to compare TFC 12 yrs around 275 thousands subribers abroad to GMApinoy TV 2 yrs old 125 thousand already in two yrs.

and to some who does not care what the true is about Mega manila rating, I advise you to go and file a complain and challenge the rating that you dont agree, however I advise too and remind you that ABS accepted that result alraedy that’s why no point of challenging,,,, just focus outside mega manila where they have better rating….ganyan lang naman…

and to you Nuber,, show an evidence of gaya gaya, you guys like to write thing you never have eveidence or proof, and if you have evidence then prove it… dahil kung mayron may ganyan nangyayari then the first group who will file the complain shoud be ABS and then should be on court now kung tama ang claim niyo.

AGB neilsen clearly says MEga manila and that means mega manila lang, lalabas na mali ang report kung kasali labas ng mega manila, at kung sinabing nationwide eh di all of us expect nationwide,

ganon lang naman, and remember this company are independent, the same company who did the survey during 90′s which is ABS the number 1 and the same independent company who is doing the survey until today…. kaya tanggapin at aminin…kung ano man ang result, at kung hindi tanggap magreklamo kayo sa ABS at bakit ngayon wala silang ginagawa sa resulta ng rating sa MEga manila.

for your information KANYA KANYANG PANAHON, As os 2006 TFC has 1.7million subscriber worldwide, they are garnering over 144thousands of subscriber every year. It is sad to say that GMA Pinot TV only have 125thousand subscriber in 2 years, napakabagal ng growth.

even here in america, ive been always watching wowowee because it has a lot of fun…

even some of my friends is getting addict upon watching tfc…their shows are world class..

WHY MEGAMANILA RATINGS are VERY important

1. Survey results are the main concern of advertisers. Currently there are only two main sources of TV survey reports: AC Nielsen and Audits of Great Britain (AGB). Overnight ratings are only done in the Manila area where the bulk of consumers are situated. This includes the cities and municipalities of Metro Manila and the 1neighboring provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan.

2. Of more than 80 million Filipinos, 10.2 million live in Metro Manila alone! Cavite has a population of 1.9 million, Rizal has 1.7 million, Laguna has 1.7 million and Bulacan has 2.2 million. Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces would account for almost 18 million or 22% of the total Philippine population. There are only three considered metropolis in the country. Of the other metropolitan areas, Metro Cebu has a population of 1.4 million and Metro Davao has a population of 1.2 million. Other key cities with population over 250,000 but are not considered metropolis are Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Zamboanga, San Fernando and Baguio. Dagupan, a relatively small city, only has a population of 150,000. All in all, Luzon would constitute 56% of the total Philippine population. Mindanao would account 24% and Visayas 20%. 7. Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna and Bulacan are in the top ten richest provinces of the Philippines with lower poverty incidences. Metro Manila consumers are the most important to advertisers because of its high standard of living. Nearly 100% of the upper class have TV sets, 94% of the middle class have TV sets and 46% of the lower class have TV sets.

8. Generally, Filipinos watch about 200 minutes of television daily. This high level of viewing is only second to Japanese viewers. Peak viewing times are between noon and 1 pm and in the prime time from 7 to 10 pm. Metro Manila has the highest ratio of TV exposure with 91.3% while other regions are more exposed to the radio. 9. There is a ‘culture of centralism’ where most of the TV programs are produced in Manila. National headquarters of the TV networks are located in Metro Manila.

10. Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and Dagupan does not represent the viewing habits of the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Viewing habits vary considerably from city to city. Metro Cebu (where ABS-CBN leads) does not represent the viewing habit of the whole Visayas because it differs with the viewing habit of Iloilo (where GMA-7 leads), another large city in the Visayas. Dagupan does not represent the viewing habit of the rest of Luzon because it has a relatively high cable penetration of 50%; the national average cable penetration rate is only 11%. Metro Davao does not represent the viewing habit of the rest of Mindanao because of its small percentage of the total TV households in Mindanao.

11. As what history shows, the provinces follow the trend in Metro Manila. ABS-CBN became number 1 in Metro Manila in 1988. It took them quite a while to grab the lead in the provinces. The company became number 1 in the Visayas in the early 1990’s. It only became number 1 in Mindanao in the late 1990’s when they started to put up TV relay stations in the key cities of Mindanao.

12. Advertising is also centered in Metro Manila. It spends $347 million dollar in advertising spending. That is almost 20 billion pesos. So TV advertising is really important. Company profit and revenues reflect the company performance in the Manila area.

1. According to infomamedia.com, it is projected that by 2010, total number of Philippine TV households would increase to 10.689 million. Cable penetration would increase to almost 15%.

Observations:

1. Assuming the ratings are true:
If GMA controls 46% of the audience share in Mega Manila and ABS-CBN controls 34% of Mega Manila audience share, it would equate to 1.61 million households for GMA and 1.19 million for ABS-CBN. The difference is a significant 420,000 TV households or 2,100,000 million people. That is a number larger than any of the total TV households of Metro Cebu or Metro Davao. If we are to analyze the other ratings and take those as representative of the national scene, the battle for supremacy would be a close fight between GMA and ABS-CBN. It would be interesting to know who would be the number 1 station. Right now, GMA enjoys the status of being number 1 with all the ratings, revenues, and profits. But one thing is for sure, this has been the most intense and closest competition in the history of Philippine television.

2. If we are to add the total number of households of Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and Dagupan. Metro Cebu would only constitute 6.1%, Metro Davao 5.4%, Dagupan 0.7% and Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces would constitute 87.8%. This is quite similar to the weights given by AC Nielsen on its survey in Mega Manila 87%, Metro Cebu 6%, Metro Davao 6% and Dagupan 1%. So the combined ratings released by AC Nielsen are statistically acceptable.

3. Mega Manila ratings are essential for advertisers and TV stations. GMA significantly lead in the Manila area. Because of this, GMA performs better financially. For the past three years, GMA has been the most profitable broadcast company in the country. It outdone ABS-CBN in 2002 and 2003 when it was just beginning to eat the ratings gap of ABS-CBN. Then in 2004 the big switch happened in the ratings, and GMA inched its way further in the profit game. And for the early part of 2005, ABS-CBN suffered its first financial loss and GMA continued to increase its earnings. That is why ABS-CBN is eager to take back the lead in the Mega Manila area.

No matter how you explain, i still believe that abs-cbn is number 1 nationwide.
If you compare Cable TV ratings to Free TV GMA is far beyond compare to ABS to households with cable. Meaning, those people can afford to but many things. And obviosly, they can also afford to but products that are endorsed and advertised by abs-cbn. While on free TV 70% of the household watching are only earning below the minimum, so even they like the products that are advertised they cannot but it.
Do you get the logic guys? Yung mga may kaya at mayayaman ABS-CBN ang pinapanood, kasi nga naman may kalidad ang programa at kaya nilang bumili ng mga produktong ina advertise. Sa gma mga mahihirap ang nanonood not because of quality programs but Clearer TV reception. Is that Clear? If i am the advertiser i will choose ABS-CBN.
Kya lang nman mas malaki ang net income ng gma kasi mas konti ang scope nila while abs has to maintain a broader business. chanel 2 is profitable but others are not like 23, anc, cinema one and others so that contribute to their losses. But when it comes to how big and how broad, and who has helped alot of people, its the number 1 station, ABS-CBN.

wow! nagbukas ng issue ang ABS regarding the rating sa bacolod,,, di naman kayang banggitin kung anong network dahil siguradon mas mahal mababayaran nila kung may counter charge ng other party…wala pa naman napatunayan…playsafe…kasi gusto lang makuha uli ng ABS cbn ang tiwala ng viewers, kasi naman halos ng show nila di na kumikita…at least siguro diyan na sila kikita pansalamantala….

me personally pnpnuod ko lng ung news and documentary ng both channel, pero ung mga variety shows ndi! papanget kz, mga trying hard. mga cheap kz gmgwa, ayosin nyo mga special effects lalo na GMA7 ndi ung puro takbuhan hahaha.. ndi ung sa front lng ng tv screen ung special effects nyo, kgya ng ulan sa screen lng ung effects, ndi affected ung sorrounding, gyahin nyo hollywood noh. wala kay bnatbat, wag nyo pagmalaki yang mga panget nyong show, sbi ung kamandag is magnda, heloooooo.. ang panget panget ng specia efects.. halata kz..hahahahaha YUCK! if u dont believe the rating then mag reklamo kayo sa AGB neilsen, kasi lugi na ABS dahil wala silang kinita sa maging sino ka man na pinagmamalaki wala naman palang binatbat……

this is so useless…… i know no one from GMA…. haha….. nd abs-cbn celebz are emmy nominated (international awards)……. GMA sux, both the president and the channel….. haha….. i dont even watch any tagalog channels (gma or abs) im a big disney, animax and axn fan….. but i know a lot of abs-cbn celebrities, i dont know y??? maybe because they’re mostly in the covers of magazines and i saw sum of them in nickelodean…. i also saw charice in ellen, neighbors said she was a contestant in one of the abs shows or sumthing…. so i guess this survey is usless….. they shud survey the whole of the phillipines,,,,,

Talagang mas hamak na no. 1 talaga ang GMA7! Kasi sa mga ratings GMA lagi ang nangunguna at mas maraming natatanggap na awards ang GMA! Marami lang talagang pera ang ABS, kasi mukha hayong pera! Mga Kapamilya wag na kayong lumaban kasi alam naman ng lahat na ang GMA7 ang no.1! Saka bakit ang mga Kapamilya fans ay gumagamit ng qoutation na “YOU’RE SUCH A LOSER!”, At wag kayong magreklamo kung GMA ang nangunguna sa ratings at kung sinasabi niyo na ang GMA ay sa Mega Manila lang naman no. 1, edi sige, kung gusto niyong mapatunayan na no. 1 ang ABS-CBN, kayo ang kumuha ng ratings sa buong Pilipinas! Oh ano kaya niyo ba iyun, kasi mas maganda lang naman ang mga shows ng GMA7 at hindi NANDADAYA SA GAMESHOWS, di katulad sa kabila! Mandaraya ang ABS! ABS, you’re such a loser!
