Oscar-winning actress and comic Whoopi Goldberg was named on Wednesday as the new co-host for ABC’s popular talk show “The View,” filling the seat vacated by Rosie O’Donnell.

She will join the daytime program in September when the show returns from summer hiatus for its 11th season. The 51-year-old Goldberg pledged to avoid stoking the drawn-out feuds — whether with the likes of Donald Trump, or Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a fellow panelist — that fueled Ms. O’Donnell’s on-camera persona like cans of gasoline and offered assurance that those arguments would never become personal, and that there was no place for grudges. O’Donnell quit the show at the beginning of the summer following a series of rows with co-hosts and producers.
