Willy Wang wins Wushu gold medal in Beijing

Filipino Willy Wang won a gold medal in the Wushu demonstration event at the Olympic Sports Center Friday.

Wushu artist Willy Wang

Wang bested 20 other competitors at the men’s nanquan and nangun event. Two other Filipino wushu artists, Benjie Rivera and Mary Jane Estimar are assured of bronze medals after beating their respective opponents in the opening round. However since wushu is a demonstration sport in Beijing, their successes will not reflect in the 2008 Olympic Games’ official medal tally.

Bakit hindi pinost yung pagkatalo ng huling atleta natin? ano ‘to, panakip butas?
walang medalya naiuwi ang mga atleta natin..kahit makapagbigay man lang ng magandang laban….ang lalayo ng pagkatalo! me-first round pa lang, ma-second….to the last sa scoring! kakahiya!

  8. maestro Says:

the media never advertised these guys who were participating in wushu unlike those who participated in other sports such as swimming and boxing and ironically those who were given limelight failed while the wushu participants did good in such sport even though its only a demo event…

  10. catch22 Says:

I’m surprised that no one has pointed this out yet, but wushu is neither a demonstration nor an exhibition sport at the Beijing Olympics. The wushu competitions is a just a regular tournament organized by the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 29th Olympic Games (BOCOG). There hasn’t been a demonstration or exhibition sport at the Games since 1992 in Barcelona. The IOC is actually intent on cutting down the number of games in the Olympics, so wushu won’t see an appearance at the games anytime soon.

Much kudos to Willy Wang, but our pathetic attempts to give credit where none is due is really sad. Mabuhay ang world-class pinoys!

  21. hello xiao Says:

Willy Wang is not a filipino. He is a chinese who happens to have migrated in the RP justust like Yao Ming who plays in the NBA but plays in the chinese team during Beijing Olympics since he is a chinese. The RP made him a filipino citizen when they see his potential before joining in Nan Gun, so the glory must go to China and not to the Philippines. So sad cz RP is claiming something that its not their own. Anyways, china will not be concerned about this issue, she will be generous by donating its extra medals to a poor country who is desperate to have one.

  22. CHOO LI Says:

im about to write a document about Mr. Willy Wang for our school paper..
but it seems like people dont agree with his winning in the wushu olympics??
i guess, even though he is a half Filipino>>>
we still should be proud of him..
because he got Filipino blood in him…
even he couldnt bring a gold thing..
    you know..
    he did his best>>>
    ^^
