Jessica Sanchez went home to Chula Vista, San Diego for the traditional American Idol homecoming week.
She was born in Chula Vista to parents Gilbert and Editha Sanchez. Her father is a Mexican-American and a US Navy veteran. Her mother traces her roots in Samal, Bataan in the Philippines.
Her first stop was Eastlake High School where fans were holding signs that read “Jessanity,” “Fanchez” and “Pinoy Pride.” She made her way into the school’s football field at exactly 11 a.m.
“This is so amazing and I’m so happy to represent Chula Vista and San Diego, I love you guys so much,” she said. She sang 4 songs at the school, “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Stuttering,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Proud Mary”.
Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox announced that the city has declared May 12 as Jessica Sanchez Day.
Afer her school visit, she went to USS Midway Museum where US Navy Command Master Chief David Griggs presented her with a personalized crew cap and jacket.
“We tried to get the smallest one we could. I hope it fits,” Briggs told Jessica.
