The Court of Appeals declared in a ruling that the Makati City government and not Taguig City, has territorial jurisdiction over the “embo” barangays of Cembo, South Cembo, East Rembo, West Rembo, Comembo, Pembo and Pitogo and Inner Fort barangays of Barangay Post Proper Northside and Barangay Post Proper Southside in Fort Bonifacio.
Fort Bonifacio is home to the rapidly growing business center Bonifacio Global City, which has fueled Taguig City’s economy in recent years. This means additional huge local tax revenues and prestige to the already richest city in the country, Makati.
The court ordered Taguig “to immediately cease and desist from exercising jurisdiction within the disputed area and return the same to Makati” and to “pay the cost of suit.”
Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano said that they will fight the ruling. It may be via a motion for reconsideration or by bringing it to the Supreme Court. “We are confident we will ultimately win this fight.” she said.
