Congressmen warn against Tokay Gecko for sale in the Philippines

Congressmen are now calling on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to look into the massive and indiscriminate “Tokay Gecko for sale” trade here in the Philippines.

Reports showed that the price for a 400-gram tokay gecko or tuko ranges from 5,000 to 500,000 pesos. Most buyers are reportedly Chinese and Koreans who uses the tuko for medicinal purposes. “[t]his indiscriminate poaching of geckos have very serious and long-term implications on our ecosystem.” said Congressman Mel Senen Sarmiento. “The DENR should now move to save the tuko from annihilation,” said Congressman Teodorico Haresco.
